I was fortunate enough to visit Castelo de Monsaraz during a trip to the region, and I can honestly say it was a truly enchanting experience! This medieval castle is a historical gem that transports you back in time, allowing you to immerse yourself in Portugal's rich cultural heritage.

As you reach the top of the hill, the breathtaking panoramic view of Lake Alqueva and the surrounding landscape leaves you in awe! It's impossible not to be captivated by the natural beauty of the region.

The castle itself is remarkably well-preserved and provides a fascinating insight into the architecture and ingenuity of the era. Strolling through the walls, towers, and courtyards feels like taking a journey through time, and the sense of being immersed in history is simply exhilarating.

The locals are incredibly welcoming and take great pride in sharing their cultural heritage with visitors. I found several local craft shops where I acquired unique pieces, and I also indulged in the delicious regional cuisine at some of the charming nearby restaurants.

The tranquility and serene ambiance of Castelo de Monsaraz are unparalleled. It's the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of modern life and enjoy moments of peace and reflection. During sunset, the romantic atmosphere adds an extra touch of magic to the place.

I highly recommend visiting Castelo de Monsaraz to anyone who appreciates history, culture, and natural beauty. It's a one-of-a-kind experience that will be etched in your...

Monsaraz Castle

Type: castle Time spent: 45-60 min Parking: available Price: free Open hours: 24/7 Path for disabled: available

The Castle of Monsaraz rises above the Mountain Monsaraz, where is located the medieval village. Its architecture mixes medieval and 17th-century elements.

In a region full of megalithic monuments, it is believed that the primitive human location of this place dates back to a prehistoric "fort", successively used by Romans, Visigoths, Muslims, etc.

For assistance, D. Sancho II donated the domains to the Order of the Templars. Under the reign of D. Dinis (1279-1325), were done the reconstruction of the Keep (1310) and the town's walls. D. João IV (1640-1656) determined the modernization of its defenses, surrounding the town with adapted walls to the artillery fire of that time: the São Bento de Monsaraz Fort.

In the 19th century, with its economic and strategic importance lost, the seat of the Council passed to the village of Reguengos...

Research it before you go. No information posted that we saw about who, when or why it's there beyond the obvious guess that Spain is close by so there was need to keep an eye on them. No accommodation we saw for the mobility challenged. Also identify parking lots around it before you go. RV parking is at the lowest level with other car parking in at least 4 other lots, a couple with very steep access off the main access road. See blue P signs. A healthy car can do it. Press on. Walking lnclines up from the parking lots are also steep. It's working village for visitors at its highest level with homes, cafes, small shops & lodging. Residents and employees drive right to the top on the access road and also within the village. But for 1st time visitors, probably not the best idea to start out trying that.
