The Monument to the Heroic Defenders of Leningrad is a impressive tribute to those who defended the city during WWII located at Victory Square along Moskovsky Prospekt.
Unveiled in 1975, this is a large scale memorial featuring a 48 metre high granite obelisk, a subterranean memorial hall and handful of bronze sculptural arrangements representing those who defended the city, including soldiers, pilots and citizen alike. Its a touching memorial.
Unfortunately, the Monument To Heroic Defenders of Leningrad is somewhat out of the way and isolated from most sightseeing in St. Petersburg. However, you can visit by way of the Moskovskaya Metro station. Alternatively, Victory Square is situated along the highway between the city and Pulkovo airport so you are very likely to see it in route when travelling to/from the airport. You can have a good look as you approach...
Read moreThs memorial was built in 1970s and is still kept in a very good condition. This memorial/museum has a very interesting and cognitive exposition on the siege of Leningrad. If you are interested in the history of WW2, you should definitely visit this place. During our visit, we were greeted by a lovely museum worker, who gave us a little lecture about the siege of Leningrad and the memorial itself. She was very knowledgeble and very passionate about the topic. She showed two mini documentaries and she even gave us two ribbons of...
Read moreThe monument and museum underground were great. They are doing an amazing job at keeping this place in a very good order. The atmosphere is unforgettable. It would be great to add subtitles in Russian and English for the short documentary that was shown, and add more exhibits and explanations so people never forget what kind of hardships the people of Leningrad had to suffer through. I was at this museum as a school girl more than 30 years ago and I still remember the impression the exhibits on the bread portion made on me, nowadays everything was depicted in a more subtle way. We should never forget our history and those heroic people who were put through hell by nazis.
