Here are some key points about the cathedral: 1. **Historical Significance**: The cathedral was founded by Peter the Great in 1703, shortly after the establishment of Saint Petersburg. It was built as part of the Peter and Paul Fortress, which was the first structure in the city and served as a defensive fortification. 2. **Architecture**: The cathedral is designed in the Baroque style and is known for its distinctive golden spire, which reaches a height of 122.5 meters (402 feet), making it the tallest building in the city. The spire is topped with a weather vane in the shape of a golden angel. 3. **Interior**: The interior of the cathedral features beautiful frescoes, intricate woodwork, and a number of chapels. The altarpiece and the iconostasis are particularly noteworthy, showcasing the artistry of Russian religious art. 4. **Royal Burial Site**: The Peter and Paul Cathedral serves as the burial site for many of the Russian emperors and empresses, from Peter the Great to Nicholas II. The Peter and Paul Cathedral is not only a place of worship but also a vital part of Russia's cultural and historical heritage, representing the city's founding and its evolution over the centuries..
The Peter and Paul Cathedral is a feature attraction in the Peter and Paul Fortress in St. Petersburg. Designed by Domenico Trezzini and built between 1712-1733 by order of Peter the Great, this is a Baroque masterpiece and the oldest church in St. Petersburg. It is also the second tallest building in the city, with its spire reaching 123 metres. The cathedral is attractive from the outside, particularly the facade, bell tower and gilded needle spire. It can be spotted clearly throughout the fortress, allowing nice photos to be taken whatever time of day you end up visiting. The interior of the church is ornate and highly decorative, similar to what you might have seen visiting Baroque churches in central Europe. Here you will see delicate chandeliers, marble corinthian columns, a decorative pulpit with gilded figures as well as vaulted ceiling with frescos. There are also traditional Russian Orthodox aspects in the impressive iconostasis as well as the tombs of Peter the Great and other members of the royal family. Note: Crowds aplenty within the cathedral but this is to be expected of attractions such as this. Note: Unlike most churches in Russia you are free to take photographs inside the Peter and Paul Cathedral. In the end, we very much enjoyed our 30 minute, finding this to be a highlight of our time spent within the fortress. We'd happily return for another visit during future trips to St. Petersburg.
It was really crowded inside and hard to take in the meaning of the different Czars buried here. I would recommend reading up on the history of the main leaders to get a deeper appreciation. It was very sobering seeing the chapel tomb of Nicholas II, the last Czar of Russia, and remembering how him and his family were murdered and dumped in unmarked graves - finally getting buried here with honors in 1998. I feel this is a very important place of history and would definitely recommend a visit! We went with Alla Tours while on a 24-hour stopover on our Norwegian Getaway Baltic cruise in August 2019.
It's located in separate island in Petersburg. In winter time you can go there by crossing the frozen river or by small bridge. This cathedral is one of my favourite cathedral. I liked this cathedral much. There's one cat Living inside the cathedral for more than 18 yrs. She's so cute. Inside the cathedral there are more cemetery of king's family. Interior decorative arts are awesome, I'm speechless. For entering inside the cathedral you have to pay entrance fee. I paid 400 rubles for 4 places including cathedral. Good luck
