It is here, where Mikhaรฏl Yurievich Lermontov wrote his famous poem Mziri ( The Novice). Iโm posting just a little paragraph. On the pictures below you can see the matching names and places. Enjoy! However itโs even better to go and see it ๐ A few years ago, There whereas, plums, noise, Embraced, like the two sisters, The streams of Aragva and Kura There was the monastery. Beside the mountain And now the pedestrian sees The pillars of the collapsed gate, And the tower and the church vault; But not much is smoked under it The spoons bless fragrant smoke, Not to hear the singing in the late hour Of the begging monks for us. Now the gray-haired old man, The half-dead guard of the ruins, By the people and by the death is forgotten, Sweeps away the dust from the gravestones, Whose the inscription says About the glory of the past - and about that How depressed by his crown, Same king, in same year, To Russia have handed his people. *** And God's grace come in At Georgia! It is blossomed Since then, in the shadow of their gardens, Do not fear of an enemies Behind the face of the friendly bayonets.

i visited it in 2013 Samtavro is an Orthodox Christian monastery complex that combines Samtavro Transfiguration Church and Nunnery of St. Nino in Mtskheta, Georgia. Built presumably in the 4th century by the King Mirian III, and reconstructed in the 11th century by the King George I and Catholicos-Patriarch Melchizedek I, Samtavro is an important Early and High Medieval historical and architectural monument, protected by UNESCO. Samtavro church is cross-in-square temple, with archature [sic?] and other decorations typical for the 11th century Georgian architecture. The famous Georgian Saint monk Gabriel is buried in the yard of Samtavro Church.

Took a trip out from Tbilisi to this convent where the remains of an orthodox saint are on display ( St. Nino ). Cameras are not allowed inside the church and a dress code is also in place like ALL churches, no shorts for men and women are to wear a headscarf. Was beautiful weather when visiting and I would highly recommend going as this is something of true history to Georgia.

Too many prohibitions inside annoyed me. Donโt touch this dont touch that, is written on every single place. And picture of their still alive Patriarch in the entrance was quite funny They put him as most important thing in whole church so far ๐คฃ Bush of Brambles was good but again everywhere written texts like youre in army, lucky those who cant read georgian

This monastery is different from others I seen because of the wall around, it looks more as a fortress than a church. But inside it was just restored with beautiful wall paintings. It's big and I think it worth the visit. Outside the wall there is the beautiful village even if full of touristic and useless merchandise.
