St. Charles Eglise — Attraction in Dakar

This tastefully decorated Catholic Church is open al day. The altar is simply tasteful with center altar and side altars on either side, on dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. The church does not have an option to light candles for praise, prayer or gratitude. The wooden pews are practical and fairly comfortable. The church has a replica of the Pieta and carved Stations of the Cross. The second floor can be accessed by a spiral staircase, with little space upstairs for a choir. É l'unica chiesa cristiana sull'isola di Gorèe, abitata prevalentemente, come tutto lo Stato del Senegal, da popolazione di religione musulmana. L'insediamento cattolico su questa isola, visitata nel 1992 anche da Papa Giovanni Paolo II, risale al 15°secolo e fu opera di marinai portoghesi. Ma questa parrocchia è stata edificata durante il governatorato Francese in Africa Occidentale nei primi decenni dell'ottocento. La posa della prima pietra avvenne nel 1828 è l'opera venne completata nel 1830 e posta sotto il patronato di San Carlo Borromeo.
