Rather than spending our last 2 nights in Sénégal in hectic Dakar we chose to hang out on the Ile de Gorée. A short ferry ride away and blissfully peaceful and atmospheric. Yes, some of the history of the island is dark but today it is now an oasis of beauty and calm 20 minutes from the center of Dakar. The Maison Augustin Ly is a fantastic place to spend the night. Our family had the 2 room suite with our own balcony and bathroom and it was perfect. Breakfast in the morning was the best we had in Sénégal with fresh fruit, crepes and juice. The staff was very helpful and responsive. I did not see the regular rooms on the ground floor but I can recommend the suite. The communal terrace is also a wonderful place...
Read moreI spent only one night in this charming old house, but I can tell you it was quiet and restful. There is no air conditioning, but I was comfortable enough with a fan located near the foot of the bed. A second fan, on the ceiling, made too much noise to leave on during the night. The bed was equipped with mosquito netting. My private bathroom was very basic but had plenty of hot water. The enclosed courtyard inside the entrance door to the house is gorgeous and comfortable and a great place to relax or have breakfast.
