Spent Easter Sunday with my awesome family and friends. Decided on a good old fashioned picnic braai out in the park...and I am happy to say, so did many other families. Durbanites came together at Japanese Gardens creating a wonderfully chilled, yet fun filled vibe...the background music, laughter and games people played, mingled with the different food aromas from the surrounding picnic spots...all set against the backdrop of the Japanese themed garden...reflected the Wonderful cultural melting pot of Durban. After a recent spate of negative publicity, Durbanites stepped up and stepped out and sparkled....even Mother Nature was impressed and held back on the showers of blessing until later that night. The Japanese Gardens are well maintained and very welcoming to day visitors. Whether you decide to picnic, or walkabout...it is an ideal and safe venue. Definitely on my return to list.

Japanese Garden : 6 Prospect Hall Rd, Prospect Hall, Durban North, 4051 This is a very beautiful, peaceful Garden. It is an ideal picnic spot for family gatherings, parties and events. It includes braai areas, swings, toilets and safe parking. It's free to visit. Enjoy a fun day with family and friends. The most important elements in a Japanese Garden is this: Stone; which symbolizes longevity, the omnipresence of natural forces. Water is the second: As it makes its way through the Garden, the water undergoes a number of changes of pace. It flows along in winding streams or accumulates in the pond. The third is Plants: The choice of plants for a Japanese garden is based on their value or significance throughout the seasons. Each season offers its unique atmosphere.

A great park to have in an ideal location. This park has been around for a long time and is much needed for the surrounding folk and even neighboring communities Sufficient well spaced parking under great shaded trees. The area is a safe place to travel to and easily accessible. The whole that surrounds the park is well kept with high level maintenance. The facilities at the park is in need of some attention, especially the toilet. There can be an addition to the present and also greater upkeep and repairs. The Pick & Pay Hypermarket is close by and provides for an ideal opportunity to shop for all the necessary. Great to see the park still well supported. Also ample play areas for kids and adults. Would highly recommend for a wonderful experience

Unfortunately a very sad reflection of a poorly led maintenance and landscaping team. The lead horticulturalist is doing almost zero to enhance and improve the state of what was once a beautiful garden. The initial layout and design was beautiful, but lack of passion, will and leadership is letting this space down horribly. I am a horticulturalist in Cape Town and have had a landscaping team for over 25 years. I went to the gardens as a keen observer and passionate gardener. I interviewed several staff members on their team size, equipment supply and leadership. There is no lack of manpower or machinery, they have a ride on mower and several brush cutters and a labor force of ten workers. The area is not large and 10men is easily enough. I would be able to repair this garden with a team of 8 men and a ride on in under a month. I believe it starts at the top. Old timber in benches needs replacing and painting, water feature pumps need replacing, weeds in paving need eradication, all lawns need cutting and edging a minimum of once per week( not just a quarter of the site), weeds in beds removed, old wood in trees need pruning. Come on guys, show some pride in your garden and place of work and make this once beautiful garden,...

Sadly, someone tried to mug me in this park a few weeks ago during my lunchtime walk. I screamed for help, but the security, not even 100 meters away, did not come to help me. When I got to the top of the park, the security guy was sitting on the floor on his phone. They explained that their reason for not coming to help was that they had to stay at the gate. I'm not sure what the point of security is if you have to stay at the gate and secure the garden. I called the manager of the park, James, to report the incident and ask him to investigate the security so others can be safe in the future. He has not returned my call. I have tried to call every day for the last 2 weeks and left messages after messages, but he is never available to take my call. He has not attempted to call me back. I am very disappointed with the lack of security and the terrible management at this place I used to call my...
