Riverside Spur — Restaurant in KwaZulu-Natal

1st we called asking if lamb ribs were served? The lady that answered said she was not sure, she will confirm with the kitchen staff, one of the kitchen staff said yes they did. How is it that the staff at spur don't know what is served on the menu???Anyway....

When we got there our waitress directed us to a dirty table, I told her the table is too untidy, (amazingly, enough she couldn't see that the table was dirty), i had to tell her pls seat us somewhere else. Instead of prioritising my family & myself, she ignores us completely with her back turned towards us while she was busy having a good laugh across the room with another waiter. I was annoyed that she would seat us at a table that was so messy & be so disrespectful So I saw an empty table near the play area & when we were directed there, even that table was full of dirty dishes & food on the floor & seats. What was wrong with this waitress??? I couldn't understand!!!Now I'm frustrated, because its my husbands birthday. My husband tells the waitress politely to clean the table, she goes away for more than 5mins & doesn't return & we are all standing at the table waiting for the table to be cleaned.

So another waitress sees us just standing there, she was kind enough to ask if we were being attended, I said yes I think we are, but I'm do not happy with our waitress & I explained to her my annoyance. She immediately cleaned the table & referred a pleasant accommodating waitress, Nozi, to us.

She apologised for the other waitress' behaviour. This was our first time going to this Spur My niece goes to Varsity college, she's always bragging about the food, so my husband suggested we go there for the lamb ribs When we began ordering our food, the first thing my husband asked why isn't the lamb ribs on the menu cos when he called early a lady confirmed with the kitchen staff & they said yes, lamb ribs were served Nozi, clarifies the misunderstanding abt the call, apparently maybe the lady & kitchen staff confused the lamb spare ribs for the lamb chops. My husband was just so disappointed. At that point, I honestly wanted to walk out.

Anyway, my husband said we'll stay & order our meals cos the kids were in the play area already. He settled for lamb chops & half chicken with chips which was a disappointment for the price & I ordered chicken & prawn schnitzel with only 2 prawns on each piece chicken, which was also a disappointment for the price The sauce was tasty but I expected more prawns not just 4 tiny prawns We just smiled & ate our food & left. I paid R884 for such inferior food & service

The Manager on duty apologised again for our bad experience & disappointment & gave my husband a complimentary glass of draught & my kids an ice cream each.

Honestly, I am a fairly patient and reasonable person but this had to be, by far, the worst service I have ever received at this Spur. I have been there a few times, so much so that I even got a Spur card because of it and I have ordered close to the same meal every single time I've come. Of course, the staff seem to never remember it, oddly enough, although, I do not blame them for that. Today links to a previous time I got poor service and I am convinced that the waiter was the same one from before as well, which may explain the poor service again. He was a red shirt wearing fellow.

To start off, I took my seat, ordered my usual meal, which is a milkshake and waffle. After ordering, two people sat down at the table in front of me, we'll call it table 1, then two more sat in front of them at another table, we'll call it table 2. By the time I got my milkshake, despite making my order 10 minutes before the people of table 1, in front of me, sat down, they were served the coffee they ordered. I did get the milkshake but at the same time as table 2.

The milkshake itself was supposed to be a chocolate milkshake with cream and these small marshmallows. I got a milkshake with no cream and five small marshmallows that looked like they were pressed together and tossed in. I didn't complain, however, as I said, I'm patient. Both table 1 and 2 then got their food several minutes before I got my waffle. When I did get my waffle, that was the biggest disappointment of all. The ice-cream on the waffle was half its normal size, partly melted, the spoon they gave me was filthy, which I regrettably only noticed after trying to spread the ice cream and they gave me a big steak knife to eat the waffle with, meaning I had to call staff to get me a proper knife.

Ultimately, the incompetence was great and made my overall experience far worse than simply bitter. Perhaps it was a lack of training for staff but this treatment, especially since it happened twice, is unacceptable. My only regret is simply eating and walking off as I feel I should have gone directly to the manager about it but, regardless, I am simply leaving this as a warning to others because I don't intend to go back there again.

On an additional note, if you were curious about the previous experience, it was by the same red shirt wearing employee where I got: A lukewarm milkshake and a waffle where the ice cream had melted to the point that the cherry they placed on top had melted halfway through it. One of my friends said that if you come too close to opening time, the service is pretty bad, which is what I used to excuse the first experience but this was close to lunchtime. Yesterday (4/11/25) my friends and I decided to go grab food at spur after writing our exam. We arrived and got seated, we waited for over 20 mins before our orders were taken, mind you the restaurant wasn't even full. The couple that arrived after us got attended first. I then went to the receptionist to ask why are we not being attended. When I look over at my table the waiter had arrived. I then went back to my table. The waiter then proceeded to ask why I was at the reception, I then responded and told him that we've been seated for more than 20 minutes without being attended, instead of taking our order he walks away. Our order was later taken by another kind waiter. We then asked if this is the kind of service they give to people and asked him to please ask the previous rude waiter why he walked away instead of taking our order. Minutes pass and we heard a loud voice shouting, it was the rude waiter showing no remorse for his actions and said something along the lines of " I don't care they can leave". He was then reported to the manager, when the manager confronted him about the situation he proceeded to be dismissive towards the manager.

My friends and I have been to this spur so many times but it was our 1st time receiving such distasteful service. I...
