The Wits Anglo American Digital Dome is an amazing technical experience and I expected much from this 360° immersive and social space. Anglo American's partnership with Wits and the Johannesburg Planetarium has amazing graphics (they have 10 4K-quality digital projectors), which replaced the aging analogue Zeiss projector and very comfortable chairs.
I'm not however sure whether it has revolutionized how I understand and experience the stars though. The host introduced and introduced the various constellations that were used to track the passage of time or circumnavigate the globe. The movie (shown on a curved dome) also told a good story about civilization, scientific progress and man’s interventions.
Our family had a good time, and I can recommend it as an outing. I also left feeling strangely dissatisfied. Was this the only story? I recently heard about Nolan Oswald Dennis, when I visited the Zeitz MOCAA at the Waterfront, and the really enjoyed an exhibition "Understudies" (entrance is free on Wednesday). Nolan's work unpacks symbolic language and traditional notions of art, science, metaphysics and knowledge. A reexamination of the relationship with teaching and authority is invited. If you really want to see beyond the horizon, consider all the factors that contribute to the design of organisational systems. Go to both shows. Or perhaps the Wits Anglo American Digital Dome, might invite Nolan Oswald Dennis to produce an...
Read moreThe new Wits Anglo American Digital Dome was an amazing experience. I went to the "Sky Tonight Show" at 7 pm on a Friday evening together with my wife and 12 year old son. I had been to the old Wits Planetarium as a kid and back in the 1990s I had the opportunity to go to a planetarium show at the Cité de l'Espace (excellent space museum in Toulouse, France). However, my wife and son had never been to a planetarium show before. In my opinion the new Wits Anglo American Digital Dome takes the planetarium experience to a whole new level. It was amazing. Both my wife and son said that the experience was way better than they had expected. Just make sure you know which show you are booking for. There are a few shows which are not astronomy related. If you are even mildly interested in astronomy I would strongly recommend going to a show at the digital dome. One thing I really liked was being able to zoom into some of the planets in our solar system and what we were shown was not an artist impression but a recreation based on data collected by satellites and space probes. This is how the planets really look. Constant Volschenk the presenter was also very knowledgeable and after the show was willing to chat to us and show us a few...
Read moreFacility is very nice and modern. I do however have a few suggestions, the new seating is very nice, but for someone that weighs not even 50kgs it's very hard to keep the chair at a reclined position, so I can only imagen that the kids will also be struggling with the same issue. The In the Sky Tonight show was below expectations, I did expect more, it's more a lecture that actually exploring what's in the sky. I don't really think we care about the star signs and the folk lore about the made-up symbols. You have missed an opportunity for this show to be mind blowing. Seeing the stars and the galaxy is what we came for, we would have loved to see more of the planets and the moon. More about what clusters are in the galaxy rather than listening to a lecture about things we can read in books. This experience took away the excitement and the thrill of getting to see things the way the astrophysicist sees them. I personally think if you put in more effort like you did with the intro of the show it would be more interesting and not...
