Howick Falls is in the center of the town of Howick. They are magnificent and beautiful but don't be fooled the crime is bad here and this place is best avoided. Even paramedics have been robbed of their phones and cash and attacked here while standing off on standby for callouts. Howick Falls is commonly known amongst the locals as KwaNogqaza, “The Place of the Tall One,” this waterfall is 95 m (310 ft) tall and is beautiful with huge tourism potential, but it is being destroyed by superstition and silent curses. Local legend has it that the water at the bottom of the falls is occupied by a giant snake-like creature - known as an iNkanyamba. The iNkanyamba is a legendary serpent said to be living in a waterfall lake area in the northern forests near Pietermaritzburg most commonly in the base of Howick Falls, South Africa. The Zulu tribes of the area believe it to be a large serpent with an equine head. When I came here the 1st time in 2013 I was disappointed with the disgusting litter and the vagrants living in the area using the falls as a bathroom and laundromat but I decided to not complain because they possibly were waiting for government housing or something and then when I went back there 6 years later it is even worse and there are more of them I've researched this extensively and it seems that the Howick falls are home to some very powerful ancestor spirits and monsters which the local people believe in and they cannot speak about. They come here to wash themselves and chase away evil spirits but clearly they have been lied to by the sangomas because this place is not where their ancestors want them. By being here they are attracting angry evil spirits instead of chasing them away. When I went back to my car after my latest visit, my window was smashed and my handbag and laptop bag had been stolen. This disgusting behaviour is the work of ignorant morons who believe the lies. They honestly don't realise that their parties and crime which is intended to chase away the "Europeans" and "Asians" who are reportedly "disturbing their ancestors . . .are actually the reason the ancestors are unhappy. The funds allocated to security and upliftment of this area have been misappropriated and stolen because they believe the lie that crime and degradation will chase us all away... MORE ABOUT THE SANGOMA LIE The iNkanyamba is a snake-like cryptid found in South Africa. The Inkanyamba is described as a 20 foot long snake-like creature with a horse-like head. The iNkanyamba lives in waterfalls and rivers and is said to summon storms. In some legends the Inkanyamba has wings and is similar to Quetzalcoatl and flies around. The Pokémon Dragonair is based off the Inkanyamba and they share similarities both being serpents and having the ability to control the weather. So ...If you go to Howick falls KZN keep an eye out for the iNkanyamba, because this legendary water serpent is said to inhabit that waterfall and the surrounding lake. The iNkanyamba is most active during the summer months, some say its anger causes seasonal storms. The Zulu tribe says the beast has an eel like body and a horse head. Cryptozoologists believe it to be a possible eel with a mutation or a new species of eel. . . I believe that it doesn't exist but that the criminal vagrants and ignorant locals very much DO exist

Howick Falls is a truly beautiful natural wonder, and on a good day, the view of the waterfall and gorge is beautiful. The sheer power of the water and the height of the falls are impressive to witness, and it's clear that nature has created something special here. However, the experience around the falls is unfortunately hampered by the general state of the viewing area. There is a noticeable amount of litter, which really detracts from the natural beauty of the place. It's a shame to see such a magnificent site not being properly maintained. While the waterfall itself is a five-star attraction, the surrounding environment brings the overall rating down. This spot has so much potential, and it would be a truly incredible destination if the cleanliness and general upkeep were improved. It's worth a visit just for the falls, but be prepared to look past the less-than-ideal conditions. Entrance is free of charge. Toilets are R2 per for use.

Howick Falls is a small attraction that can be found in central Howick. No entrance fee is required to get in. There is a museum at the falls that describes South African history and history about the early settlers in the area. It also features some great art and crafts made By Zulu clans, Bushmen etc. Entry to the museum is free and you can donate if you want to.

Walking up to the falls, there was a small food truck that sold soft drinks, water and juice. They also served fries and hot dogs. There are also some vendors selling arts and crafts so you can purchase some souvenirs.

The falls itself is pretty but the 'viewing deck' is small so getting a good picture will be difficult if it's busy. Plants and trees that grow in front of the falls by the viewing deck can also obstruct the view.

What they do have is a large lawn where you can picnic afterwards.

Overall it's a nice experience but it won't take longer than 45 min unless you plan to have a picnic; so don't set aside a whole day unless you're...
