Yeonmudae (Dongjangdae) is an absolute must-visit for history buffs and nature lovers alike. Located within the Hwaseong Fortress in Suwon, this command post offers a fascinating glimpse into Korea’s rich military history and provides some of the most stunning panoramic views in the area.

Historical Significance: Walking through Yeonmudae, you can almost feel the echoes of the past. The site played a crucial role in the defense strategies during the Joseon Dynasty. The historical exhibits are well-presented, and the plaques provide insightful information in multiple languages, making it accessible to international visitors.

Scenic Beauty: The views from the top are spectacular. You get a sweeping view of the Suwon cityscape, the Hwaseong Fortress walls, and the surrounding mountains. It’s especially beautiful during sunset when the whole area is bathed in a golden glow. The well-preserved architecture of the post, combined with the lush greenery, makes it a perfect spot for photography.

Accessibility: The climb to Yeonmudae is a bit steep, but the pathway is well-maintained and lined with benches for resting. The journey up is adorned with traditional structures and picturesque spots, so the effort is well worth it. It’s recommended to wear comfortable shoes and carry water, especially on hot days.

Facilities: The site is clean and well-maintained. There are restrooms and small cafes nearby where you can enjoy a snack or a refreshing drink. The staff and guides are friendly and helpful, and the area is well signposted.

Tips: Try to visit on a clear day to fully enjoy the views.

Bring a camera; the photo opportunities are endless.

Allocate a couple of hours to explore the surrounding fortress and other historical points of interest.

In summary, Yeonmudae (Dongjangdae) at Hwaseong Fortress is a perfect blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. Whether you're a history enthusiast, a photographer, or just looking for a peaceful place to unwind, this site will...

I really like this place it is very historical and beautiful in its vastness ( my Niece and her family spent over 6 hours on top "walking the wall" and didn't finish it) there really are beautiful views on the top (plus look up in the gates to see what dragon is overhead) it is fun and very clean and as an added bonus there's archery training right in the middle of the courtyard for 2000 won for "how to" training and 10 shots - be forewarned you will be the one who picks up the arrows ha! But definitely worth it I learned how to stick the target 4 out of 10 tries -just follow their directions. Plus parking is across the street for 2000 won and very clean restrooms are there available. I...

This particular building isn't one of the more impressive along the wall by any means, but what sets it apart is it was the only place I went to along the wall that was quiet and nearly devoid of people.

This building is walled in on all sides creating an enclosed courtyard of sorts, with all the sounds and sights of Suwon blocked off. It was a great place to walk around for a few minutes and appreciate the Hwaseong Fortress for what it once was, without the hustle and bustle of people and cars all around you. If you're looking for quiet solitude while walking the walls, this was one of my favorite...

Yeonmudae Post is located inside Suwon's Hwaseong Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Situated on a relatively high hill between Changryongmun (the east gate of the fortress) and Hwahongmun (a north floodgate), Yeonmudae is an excellent military observation post with sweeping views of the inside of the fortress. After the fortress was completed in 1796, Yeonmudae was used as a training ground for troops for over two centuries, where they learned fighting skills involving swords, spears and arrows.
