Suwon Hwaseong is a dream fortress built by the king Jeongjo as a reformation ruler during the Joseon Dynasty. It is a second-to-none architectural structure we are proud of. Although many parts of the fortress had been damaged during the Japanese colonial era and Korean War, it had been repaired and restored since 1975 based on the”The Construction Records of the Hwaseong Fortress (Hwaseong Songyouk eugye)”, UNESCO memory of the world that records its construction conditions. The restored Suwon Hwaseong Fortress was registered ® as UNESCO World Cultural Heritage in 1977 as its superiority was recognized. Suwon Hwaseong Fortress is located in downtown area of Suwon and Dulle-gil Trail that stretches about 5.7km is formed long the fortress. There are diverse ways to enjoy 😉 the beauty of this Fortress. You may slowly take a walk around the Fortress, feeling the breath of king 🤴 Jeongjo who had love for the people and filial piety,or you may focus on Jeong yakyong’s excellent scientific achievement that demonstrates the highlight of civil engineering and construction. Just by strolling along the Fortress, you will enjoy fascinating artistic values as well as breathtaking landscapes. Experience a totally different scene anywhere on this connected trail.

Hwaseong fortress is one of the most significant historical place in korea. It is also a world heritage declared by UNESCO. We were staying at Yongton in Suwon. It took about 40-45 minutes to reach there using local transport. For our busy schedule in Korea, we go there in the evening, and obviously we found the gate as closed. As the main gate is closed, so we started to climbing by the hill-track cause the fortress is allocated in a big area. So it’s not a problem, if you found the door as closed. There is a lots of things to see. When we started to climbing first of all we found a Buddhists temple. A huge statue of Gautam buddha was there. Then we saw the wall of protecting fortress. The wall is surrounding the whole area (miniature version of great wall 😉). In that wall there was some guards room. We continued our climbing following the wall. When we arrived at top of the hill. A place we found, from where the whole Suwon city can be seen. We saw the beautiful cityscape of Suwon city. If you want to visit any Korean histrionically significant place, I will recommend you to visit Suwon Hwaseong Fortress.

Certainly the biggest draw for Suwon, and one of the biggest tourist attractions in all of Korea, this 200+ year old fortress is great. Nowadays you can walk along the walls for free, making a circle around the old city (mostly 3-story shops now) while surrounded on all sides by mountains and a modern city of over 1,000,000 people. Despite the modern world encroaching, it's still pretty easy to see how incredible this place must have seemed when it was first built. Walking the walls can take anywhere from 2 hours to 6 hours, depending on how far you decide to walk, how many breaks you take, and whether you decide to walk or take a cab back to your starting point. My recommendation is walking the walls on the way out and then walking outside the walls on the way back. Although walking the wall is cool, seeing it from outside is certainly more impressive. And best of all, it is free. The only thing that costs money is a visit to the emergency palace, and even that is super cheap. Highly recommended

Suwon was one of four main regional government centers during the Joseon dynasty. Hwaseong Fortress, built to protect the city, was designated as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site on December 12, 1997 for its historical value. The fortress offers various performances daily as well as the Suwon Hwaseong Cultural Festival every fall. The walls stretch for 5.7 kilometers, with Paldalsan Mountain at the center. The fortress, constructed from 1794 to 1796, was built as a display of King Jeongjo’s filial piety towards his father and to build a new pioneer city with its own economic power. Suwon Hwaseong Stamp Tour, Hwaseong Fortress Tourist Trolley, Gukgung (Traditional Korean Archery), Hanok Technology Exhibition Hall, Animation Video - Tour of Hwaseong Fortress with Hwaseong the Mascot, Bell of Hyowon – Bell Ringing Experience, Flying Suwon. Incredible place with lots of history. The fact that it is intertwined with the modern city is particularly interesting as it offers a direct contrast between the past history and the current one which is developing. I was surprised that for a metropolitan area of nearly 20million people, how few people were actually at this location. I visited both during day time and late into the evening and found very few people there, no lines to get in and hardly any tourists (literally less than 5 people who weren't locals). Day time visits are really hot and humid, whereas evening visits are more agreeable, though still humid. The Wall's lights stay in until about midnight. At the risk of changing the dynamics of this place being so sparesly visited, I do recommended checking it out, as I found it to be culturally enriching, and a beautiful site overall. Do take plenty of water.
