Laredo palace — Attraction in Alcalá de Henares

Laredo's Mansion is a beautiful Neomudejar building from the late 19-th century, situated halfway between Álcala's city center and the train station. As of March 2021, there are no guided tours. But you can visit the interior for €1, which must be paid in cash at the entrance. They don't have change, nor do they accept credit/debit cards. The building's current state of affairs is pretty sad. Many rooms as well as the garden are closed, probably due to the pandemic. The highlights are the medieval "Kings room", which features several royal portraits, and two other rooms with quirky Arab decorations and tiles. There are no written explanations of the rooms. An homage to different kinds of architecture and historical throwbacks as envisioned by a former 19th century mayor of Alcala, Manuel Laredo. The building could be termed a "folly", simply designed for its aesthetics with no other use. However its execution by the architect leaves any visitor captivated by the story he was trying to tell. Este palacete es un bello edificio historicista, con mezcla de estilos y partes de edificios preexistentes (artesonado mudéjar y azulejería de un palacio) procedentes de ventas tras expropiarse los mismos. El edificio es de 1884.

La visita guiada cuesta 2,5 euros la tarifa general, con reducciones para ciertas personas. Discurre por las diferentes salas de la casa, que albergan maquetas, libros antiguos, la biblia políglota cisneriana, una biblia regia de época de Felipe II... aunque tal vez lo más interesante sea el propio edificio y su recargada decoración con imitación de yeserías árabes, pinturas murales de estilo neogótico, azulejería... También contiene muebles recreando el uso de las salas y el que fue el primer váter de Alcalá con agua corriente.

Esta casa fue el sueño vital de su dueño, que finalmente se convirtió en pesadilla, ya que gastó tanto en su construcción y materiales que tuvo que entregar la vivienda en pago a los múltiples acreedores impagados que dejó. Este señor llegó a ser alcalde de Alcalá.

En el centro de la casa hay una sala altísima, con una cúpula estrellada y paredes pintadas con reyes de la corona de Castilla, Aragón y algunos cardenales, que es donde Laredo se reunía con sus visitas más ilustres.

La visita está bien, aunque un poco cara para su duración. Lo peor es que no incluye el jardín, que desde fuera parece bastante bonito.
