Masca is a truly fascinating and incredibly picturesque village in Tenerife, nestled in dramatic mountain scenery that feels almost otherworldly. It’s definitely worth seeing – but only if you’re well-prepared for the journey.
The road to Masca is not for the faint of heart. If you have a fear of heights or get motion sickness from winding roads, you might want to think twice. The drive includes countless sharp turns and narrow mountain roads where cars and buses barely manage to pass each other – sometimes with just 2–5 centimeters of clearance. It’s a very stressful experience, especially if you’re in a rental car and not used to driving in such conditions. I honestly wouldn’t recommend driving there yourself.
Also, a word of caution for families: this is not a destination for young children. If your kids are under 9 or 10 years old, I’d strongly advise skipping it. We made the mistake of going with a young child and deeply regretted it – the combination of the drive and the terrain was just too much.
That said, for adult travelers who are comfortable with heights and mountain roads, Masca offers breathtaking views and a unique, remote experience...
Read moreThis small village nestled in the mountains is an absolute surprise and a true gem. It is most certainly worth rhe drive up the mountain - even for the spectacular views all alomg the road - truly marvelous views of the exotic greenery. It is perched on the side the the mountain, the well-displayed signs guide visitors from through the vilage, from the well- designed car park, through the main small square, down alleyways, to the small but fantastic museum. The museum for me was astonishing, it reminded me of the fsntastic sense of aesthetics and care for detail one wpuld expect at a museum in Switzerland. It was beautifully laid oit, information presented in various languages with intuitive boards and installations, also in it's garden, where one can take in a breath-taking view of the two mountains, and the turquoise-blue sea peaking out. The small square seems a scene taken from an old western film: a massive and truly magestic tree fills the square, woth a darling little white church to one side, and a breathtaking view from the other side of the rowing hills diving downwards,...
Read moreWe stopped in after our hike in the nearby mountains and were really pleased we did so. It really is Tenerife's (smaller and more modern) answer to Peru's Machu Picchu. Similar to Machu Picchu, the small village has been built on the ridge which straddles two valleys with a small mountain peak at the end which creates an amazing backdrop. It is well worth to take advantage of the free parking at the top and take a pleasant stroll, through the village, down to the foot of the small mountain at the end. On your way down, there are many places to stop to eat and drink with breath taking views. There is also a visitors centre where you can learn about the history of this impressive place. In my opinion, this is a must see when you visit Tenerife, even better do what we did and combine it with a hike in the...
