Visiting the Santa Iglesia Catedral Basílica de la Encarnación is an absolute must when in Málaga. This awe-inspiring cathedral, often lovingly nicknamed La Manquita ("The One-Armed Lady") due to its unfinished second tower, is a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture that leaves a lasting impression on every visitor.
From the moment you approach the façade, you’re struck by the sheer scale and elegance of the structure. The blend of Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque elements tells a story of centuries of devotion, craftsmanship, and evolving styles. Step inside, and you're welcomed into a space that feels both grand and serene. The interior is flooded with natural light, illuminating the soaring columns, intricately carved choir stalls, and the breathtaking domed ceiling.
The choir, carved in mahogany and cedar, is one of the most exquisite in all of Spain, and the 18th-century organ is a marvel not only to behold but to hear if you're lucky enough to catch a performance. Every chapel within the cathedral holds its own unique art and atmosphere, each inviting quiet reflection and admiration.
One of the best parts of the visit is the rooftop tour—if you’re able, take the climb. The panoramic views over Málaga's old town and the shimmering Mediterranean Sea are unforgettable and give you a deeper appreciation for the cathedral’s size and setting.
The staff and guides are friendly and knowledgeable, enhancing the visit with rich historical context. Whether you’re religious, an architecture lover, or simply curious, the Málaga Cathedral offers a deeply moving experience and a glimpse into the soul of the city.

Outside, you can't help but feel humble yet amazed by the architecture which dominates high above the trees. We went in the Spring and noticed the beautiful orange trees casually showing fruit just outside the church. There are lovely places to sit and rest outside the church as you listen to the small fountains and watch the pigeons gratefully appreciating the supply of water.
Inside...stunning.. well worth the price to enter. If you are a Christian, Catholic or otherwise, you can appreciate the painstakingly gorgeous detail which has been bestowed upon the architecture, the sculptures, and the paintings. Even if you don't speak or read the languages of the placards, you can still understand and appreciate the depictions of Jesus's messages and sacrifices. Additionally, you notice the depictions of the people along the way following the Crucifixion of Jesus and the struggles they faced as they fought and died to spread the message to a world filled with greed, hate, and unacceptance of the Devine Creator and His sacrifice.
Even if you are an Atheist but appreciate art, the sculptures and paintings displayed in such a masterpiece of architecture will almost overwhelm your visual senses. This church was one of the main highlights...
