Torre de les Hores — Attraction in Pals

It is a tall, round tower built on a circular plan, the last remaining part of the former Castell de Pals, a castle whose existence is documented as far back as the year 889. This fortification was completely destroyed during the Catalan civil wars in the 14th and 15th centuries, and stones from the ruins were later reused in the reconstruction of the local church and nearby houses. Towering over the old town of Pals, the Torre de les Hores (Tower of the Hours) stands 15 meters high and 7 meters in diameter. Its name comes from the clock that was installed on the belfry added to the top of the tower in the 15th century. At the foot of the tower, you can still see the remains of Visigothic-era tombs, offering a glimpse into the region's deep and layered history. Visited on a Monday morning in late May. We had a great visit here. It was thankfully not terribly busy though there were still plenty of people about. We had a nice time wandering around the tower area though on our visit you couldn’t go up it. The tower looks quite well preserved overall, very clean too. Unless you’re really into you’re history and want to spend a lot of time here, I think it’s the kind of site that can be done in a morning or part of an afternoon.
