Night over Salamanca. La Clerecia Church or the church of the clergy. Construction of the church started probably in 1599 according to the order of Queen of Spain Margaret of Austria (1584-1611) and had been accomplished in 1617, but final works were accomplished only in 1754. Church was built as the act of reparation to the Order of Jesuits for the act of imprisonment suffered by its founder Ignatius Loyola (1491-1556) by the Inquisition in the Mocha Tower of the Old Cathedral of Salamanca. Loyola was brought before the ecclesiastical inquiry commission of Inquisition on the charge of sympathy with the Alumbrados (Illuminaties) but was released with admonition only. So, even Loyola, who was canonized in 1622, appeared in Inquisition as the defendant. In fact, Inquisition acquitted defendants and requested simple repentance very often. Church was confiscated from Jesuits after their expulsion from Spain in 1767 according to Pragmatic Sanction issued by the King Carlos III of Spain (1716-1788).
