Night over Salamanca. La Clerecia Church or the church of the clergy. Construction of the church started probably in 1599 according to the order of Queen of Spain Margaret of Austria (1584-1611) and had been accomplished in 1617, but final works were accomplished only in 1754. Church was built as the act of reparation to the Order of Jesuits for the act of imprisonment suffered by its founder Ignatius Loyola (1491-1556) by the Inquisition in the Mocha Tower of the Old Cathedral of Salamanca. Loyola was brought before the ecclesiastical inquiry commission of Inquisition on the charge of sympathy with the Alumbrados (Illuminaties) but was released with admonition only. So, even Loyola, who was canonized in 1622, appeared in Inquisition as the defendant. In fact, Inquisition acquitted defendants and requested simple repentance very often. Church was confiscated from Jesuits after their expulsion from Spain in 1767 according to Pragmatic Sanction issued by the King Carlos III of Spain (1716-1788). Church was grunted to the Royal Clergy of San Marcos and received its present time name, La Clerecia. Salamanca, Castile and Leon, Kingdom of 🇪🇸 Spain 🇪🇸. November 30, 2014.

The building is beautiful, yes, but I don't think the visit is worth it for those who want to learn about its history because, besides seeing very little, the guide isn't very clear, and there's not really time to read and compare what's on the building's walls during the tour. However, the price isn't that high, and at the top of the tower, you can take some good photos.

Our 2019 Spain travel was filled with adventure, great food & wine and history.

The Pontifical University of Salamanca has its own church and the altars are exquisite. These are positioned between the columns where Carrara marble plays a part on the grandiosity of the interior.

The height of the ceiling, the narrow positioning of the altars, add to the magic of the building and we can either pray or reflect at each of these exquisite works of art.

Why choose Salamanca?

Salamanca is a beautiful and friendly city in the northwest of Spain, 212 km from Madrid, in the autonomous community of Castile and Leon.

A small city of more than 160,000 inhabitants , its relatively large student population of approximately 35,000 gives the city a cosmopolitan, hospitable and pleasant edge.

The University, founded in 1218, is the oldest in Spain and along with Paris, Oxford and Bologna, is one of the oldest in Europe.

Salamanca is also home to numerous long-established and highly respected academies and learning centers of Spanish that boast a highly trained teaching staff.

It is the perfect place to learn Spanish, to speak a proper, fluent, and accent-less Castilian in a friendly, warm atmosphere.. These are just some of the reasons why students choose Salamanca to learn...
