I am disappointed with our stay at the Zenit hotel in San Sebastián. As returning guests who have been coming to this beautiful city for our anniversary for the past 11 years, we were excited to try out a new hotel that we had heard great things about. However, our experience at Zenit has been far from satisfactory.
Right from check-in, we encountered issues with our key not working multiple times. This was frustrating and not the kind of welcome we were hoping for. We flew in from an other portion of our vacation and arrived at 11am and was told check in is not until 2pm but we could leave our phone number ,when the room is ready they will call us, no call ever received. Return to the hotel at 4pm expecting to waltz into our room. They had the same 20 min problem in finding our reservation they had at 11am and the room still did not have the extra bed ready at 4pm. Furthermore, despite specifically requesting a room with privacy and a view, we were given a room located just a few doors down from the elevator with a view of a neighboring apartment complex (photo attached). This was not the romantic setting we had hoped for on our special anniversary trip. We noticed a few days before our arrival date that larger rooms, with a bathtub vs just a shower, had become available and asked if we could book one of those when we arrived, at our added expense. We were told no, even after we explained we were willing to change rooms mid booking of our 7 night stay. We booked directly through the hotel and it seemed they were very unwilling to make this stay even the slightest bit special.
Additionally, in all our years of staying in San Sebastián, this is the first hotel that did not even acknowledge our anniversary. No congratulations, no special touches in the room - nothing. While I know it’s small every other hotel has given a piece of cake or chocolate and bottle of Cava. It was disappointing. The room did not have coffee (a little crazy in Spain )but did provide tea bags. We used the tea bags, expecting them to be replenished, but after 4 days, they have not been restocked.
The gym is 1 bike, 1 very old treadmill, 1 elliptical. If even 1 other couple want to work out you will be a gym spectator. There is a stack of about 7 dumbbells as well.
Overall, our stay at the Zenit hotel has been underwhelming and lacking in the attention to detail and customer service that we have come to expect from our experiences in San Sebastián. While over all the hotel is rather nice there are many nice hotels. It’s the little details that make the difference. Like the hotel we previously stayed, and will be checking into in a few days just 2 blocks away and closer to the bus stop.
The rooms are clean and well appointed. Also the room is rather large for European standards. Cleaning staff has been great with new towels and always getting in the room when we are. It around. They also have a pillow menu that was a very nice touch. The hotel probably deserves more stars but this is my review and I am...

Read moreHotel is not within walking distance of San Sebastien Renfe station, located far away in rather residential location away from old town bustle / beach Booked hotel wrongly as we thought this was within walking distance of renfe, but is instead a 5min taxi ride away For a 4-star hotel and paying EUR 300 / night, there was no complimentary water in room / lobby, mini fridge was not working, no tissue paper (we made do with toilet paper) The wash basin was particularly obnoxious ie no option to hold water in to quick clean clothes / water took some time to clear away so you get a case of all the scum still floating around far too long for comfort / disposable soap was given (but no dish tray) TV was an oddball ie it resets to starting channel everytime the TV is turned off, so you end up having to remember s / switch again to your previously watched channel eg CNBC No stirrers or utensils in room The wireless key card was a pain - sometimes it reads, sometimes it didn't. Once, it took us 1min to open it, trying to figure which card side would ride better. This should be a simple affair.
The front desk was kind and helpful enough though, and also the interesting concept of restaurant Morlans.
However, given a choice, we would not stay here again as it is far from everything that we want to experience, yet at a...
