Santillana Zoo — Attraction in Santillana del Mar

Although the entry fee was €25, it represented excellent overall value for money, due to that money helping the organisation's ongoing animal conservation and rescue work. As an entomologist, I was keen to see the mariposario (butterfly house) and noticed it needed more personal attention, with cobwebs, and a threat from spiders and parasites. However, it was still interesting for me to see several tropical species (many of which I have seen in their natural habitats) and their life cycles, especially the Heliconius, Papilios, and crepuscular Owl butterflies. The Lemur exhibit was good and there are plenty of reptiles to see, along with wild horses, lynx, squirrels, etc, many water birds and a large area for children to interact with more friendly species, such as ponies, Guinea pigs, a variety of chickens and rabbits. To be honest, this place was a bit painful to go through. After seeing nature reserves and such, places that give their animals so much space and room, coming here just fills one with guilt...

Though most of the birds were treated alright, maybe just a few, I just felt bad for other animals. The space they had wasn't horrible per say, it wasn't a cage. But it's still not enough for animals of their size. And with the birds, even some of those weren't kept in the right conditions. The area where they had birds in cages, some could be seen trying their best to hide as they rip out their own feathers...

That being said, one of the nicer things here was the butterfly section. It will be warm in there, so be prepared for that, but it's worth it for beauty of just seeing so many colours flying around. That and they leave some fruit around for you to scoop up and be able to have butterflies on your finger.

But overall, there are some much better options nearby, and more morally...

El lugar muy ordenado y bien señalizado. Me fascinó la amplia varidad de especies que hay en este zoológico encontrando desde algunas de Asia hasta otras de Australia , Sudamérica y Madagascar. La mayor variedad de especies que pude apreciar fueron especialmente de primates , aves y artrópodos. Además muchas de ellas se encontraban en grave peligro de extinción como los leopardos de las nieves y bisontes europeos y gracias a la acción , el trabajo y disciplina de los dueños y trabajadores han sido recuperadas poco a poco con dedicación y paciencia. Agradezco enormemente ser capaz de apreciar a estos exóticos animales de tan cerca y de forma tan detallada. Es evidente la pasión de los dueños hacia los animales y se ve reflejada especialmente en las mariposas , que presentan su propio "invernadero" espacioso donde pueden revolotear a sus anchas mientras caminas junto a ellas. Este paraíso de mariposas sencillamente me impresionó y no pude evitar visitarlo 2 y 3 veces más. No obstante , me chocó bastante el reducido espacio de algunos de los animales como los grandes felinos. Cuando visité a la tigresa y el leopardo estos presentaban conductas anormales como dar vueltas reiteradamente. Se les veía ansiosos y asustados , cosa que me entristeció ya que apenas reaccionaban a los estímulos correctamente o a los ruidos de sus alrededores ni a las personas delante de ellos sino que simplemente daban vueltas y vueltas en el mismo sitio. Esto mismo sucedía con los lobos , que tampoco tienen espacio suficiente teniendo en cuenta los muchos kilómetros que recorren al día en estado salvaje. El cocodrilo enano, los bisontes y los orangutanes tampoco se quedan atrás. Estos animales necesitan moverse y sus músculos también además de que esos espacios excesivamente reducidos pueden afectarles negativamente a nivel psicológico generando estrés crónico y apatía. A pesar de todo, en general, aprendí mucho de estos fascinantes animales al poder verlos tan bien y disfruté de nuevas especies exóticas que no sabía siquiera que existían como el enorme pelícano gigante , los búhos reales , los tití cabeza de león dorado con su hermoso pelaje y los imponentes lemures negros , entre muchas otras especies más. Excelente trabajo en crear este zoo pero porfavor, esto es CRÍTICO, tengan en cuenta LOS ESPACIOS más detenidamente porque de poco sirve hablar de conservación si los animales no disponen del espacio necesario para desarollar sus...
