The fortress of Santa Bárbara rises on the Guanapay volcano and was once used to protect against pirates and other enemies.

The nobleman Agustín de Herrera y Rojas had the fortress built in the mid-15th century to provide protection against constant raids.

Throughout its history, the fortress was rebuilt several times.

The castle not only served as a watchtower to look out for pirate ships, but it was also used as a refuge for the population, as a dungeon and even as a military dovecote.

Lanzarote has been the most affected by international piracy of all the Canary Islands.

The Piracy Museum is divided into two historical perspectives or departments: piracy in Teguise and international piracy in the...

What an amazing fortress? The exhibition inside details its history, its strategic importance to the island of Lanzarote, its frequent battles against pirates and foreign invaders. Using models, photos, drawings, paintings and videos, it is a riveting journey through centuries of history. Along with display cabinets of actual tools and weaponry, there is something of interest here for all of the family. You will neither regret nor forget your visit here. And based on a €3 entry fee, the custodians do an...

It's totally worth to spend a few hours there. The castle has been renovated recently and it's quite impressive. Small, but indoor is an unexpected maze of little rooms, corridors, stairs. The view from the roof is spectacular. The museum is almost empty though, admission is free. Still needs to be refilled with all the stuff you can see on the website. Also, there is a path that walks around the edges of the crater, you have a 360° view on the island and it's countless volcanos...

This is a great little well managed tourist site. The road leading up to the site is new and makes it an easy drive. The museum is well laid out and very informative. Even if you do not like museums it is still worth the drive just to take in the spectacular views and scenery. If you just want to drive up for the views you do jot have to pay entry which is very inexpensive anyway.

Great location and stunning views, and entry was free at the time of writing. Piracy exhibits have more or less vanished since we last visited with only a random collection of pirate themed artwork still on view. Could definitely benefit from some information displayed on the history of the castle, which we had to look up on Wikipedia.
