I have been to this beach several times, where I stay a few days, as a waypoint, driving to points south. The beach is wide and expansive , social distancing is guaranteed, local rates are very good, and there are a number of casual places to eat fresh food, including western fare, all at very reasonable prices. There isn't much night life which is ok given the opportunity to be in such an easily accessible location that is so peaceful and quiet. I stayed once again in 2020 and it appears the area may be developed further in the near future as the new north south fast train will stop nearby and there has been major improvements to the local roads. There are a few new restaurants and the general area has an upgraded look. It is still a very quiet and charming location with a beautiful beach. In 2020 I did not see any of the Soi dogs I encountered in prior years. If you looking for big beach resorts and wild night life this location is not for you. If a big beach with nightly views of squid fishing boats way off shore, good homestyle food, appreciative hosts, and good clean air at reasonable prices, with easy access to the Petchkasem Road (North/South Road) then make it a 2-3 days or more stop as a...
Read moreThis quaint beach community is my favorite place in Thailand. The beach is beautiful and lovely for swimming as there are NO BOATS. (Albeit the beach sadly often gets covered in plastic garbage washing ashore especially after storms.) I advise you to wear a T-shirt to reduce exposure to sand flees when walking on the beach or swimming.
There are no large scale developments here and the natural landscape is still intact. The people here are friendly, relaxed and generous. Everything is reasonably priced. There are a couple restaurants with excellent quality Thai and or European cuisine. I recommend "Seaview" (local fish restaurant), "Volcano" (mediterranean cuisine), "Maliblues" (Italian cuisine) . Close to the beach there is a small market town called Saphli with a nice vegetable & fish market and convenience stores. Close to Thung Wualen there is a road with a shop selling bread and other foreign and european products. There are some farang mostly senior, residing in Thung Wualen.
PLASTIC GARBAGE periodically washing up on the beach and the periodical air pollution from burning crops and waste tarnish the overall idyllic...
Read moreApril 2022 and I visited Thung Wau Laen Beach. The tide is out and there are a bunch of Thai families and no farung tourists.
The wind is up a little today, so the water is a little choppy but it is nice and pleasant. There are lots of vendors selling whatever you need like ice-cream and there are seafood restaurants along the beach. There are "touts" for the restaurants that bring you the menu, a beer, even a chair. A few minutes later whatever you ordered, magically appears and the seafood is definitely fresh. Tempura coated squid today.
The Soi dogs that live on the beach hang around when there is food in the hopes of scoring a snack along with the pigeons.
So, pleasant day at the beach and just a few local families and no tourists. There is some debris on this beach because it gets washed up but the water was clean/clear and no speedboats stirring up everything. Nice Beach to visit and to stay away from...
