Watching Port FC at PAT Stadium is a “must do” Bangkok experience in my opinion.
If, like me, you’re a bit over the big $ hoopla of top league British and European football, a visit to PAT Stadium is a nice throw back to when teams were closely connected to their communities, and game day was affordable to the many.
Grassroots footy has never felt more fun and it begins when you walk into the gates of the stadium. Awaiting visitors is a big open market-like area with food and drink booths, and tree covered spaces to socialize, and pre-load, if that’s your desire. Noodles, satay, Issan sausages, fried rice, and much more is offered - this is way beyond the usual pies, fries, and hot dogs.
Beers and soft drinks are also available and for pretty reasonable rates from between 20 to 60 baht.
The ground itself, is compact, seating just over 6000 fans to provide an intimate, atmospheric fan experience. I loved being so close to the action, like you are sitting above the players, and right in the middle of the passion, color, and noise of the Port fans and their ultras.
Like Bangkok itself, the fan base is mostly Thai, but with a fair few expats too. Many bring children to add to the vibe. Each stand also includes a team of drummers with a hype man or lady leading chants and songs.
The only small downside is the 12-15 minute walk from the Queen Sirikit subway station to the stadium but it’s not a biggie.
Best of all, a night out is cheap - my ticket, a can of coke, and two satay sticks set me back 200 baht...
Read moreA great way to have an authentic Thai / Bangkok experience in a place where you are genuinely welcomed.
It's fun, affordable (no dual pricing system here) and thankfully informal, compared to football stadiums in England / Europe.
Tickets are cheap (180B for best seats, cheaper options available) and easy to get from a small ticket booth at the north West corner of the stadium. Open 6 hours before kick off; I usually get mine 1 hour before. The wait time is maybe 5 mins.
On entrance you will get a stamp for re-entry. Once inside it's free seating in the stand.
Outside there are lots of food and drink stalls with some tables and seats. Be careful to only sit at the chairs that are attached to the small you bought from. It's not free seating and the stall owners can be a bit territorial.
Prices are very fair. A large Leo beer for 70B. They can be taken into the ground, no problem.
The football is of a decent standard and entertaining. There's a friendly atmosphere, with no real animosity. Suitable for families.
Overall, this is a fun, unique Bangkok experience, and well worth your...
Read moreA real football stadium, you are right by the field. They have covered seating and uncovered seating. Its cheap (180B), reasonably clean for Thailand, they have all sorts of fried food and hotdog vendors (there is always a line for the Omelets, the old lady needs a bigger wok) and the crowd is great. Everyone wears their Port jerseys, they drum and jump up and down and have a great time. Totally family friendly. One of the best things to do on a Sunday evening in BKK is head down there for a match. Use MRT Queen Sirikit, walk to the Khlong Toi market and cut through there, get your raw meat fix before the game! For more stuff from me, take a look at my Instagram...
