Tuesday was a great day. Still spring weather but it is so nice to get out. Stella and I decided to head over to Tom Campbells Hill Natural Park for our walk. I grew up in Calgary and, for most of my life, this hill was always a part of the zoo. The grass grazers were up here but only the adventurous would ever see them. As the zoo developed, the hill stopped being used by the zoo. Eventually, the city took over the hill but I still remember the Tom Campbell sign from which the park got its name. The city has encouraged a Rough Fescue grassland habitat. The park is 18 hectares complete with an off leash dog park Anyhow, enough history, Stella and I really enjoyed our visit. The views of the city were spectacular. You can see for miles. The views of the city were incredible. Plus you can see the Science Centre and up and down Deerfoot. And if you like to watch the planes fly into the airport, this is the park for you. I think I could read some of the numbers on the bellies of the planes. We accessed the park by going into the neighbourhood but it is easily accessible from the zoo parking lot. There is a paved path that will take you very comfortably to the top of the hill. This is where Stella had her pic taken. The top of the hill is nice and flat which is good for a game of fetch. There is a beautiful promenade lined by poplars leading to the main viewing point. The point has an interpretive exhibit explaining the history of the park and some ecological information. I found it very informative. Stella was unimpressed. There were not a lot of people there when we were but it was a steady flow of people and dogs. Most of the dogs were off leash but some, like Stella who isn't too good at recall yet at 5 months, were on a leash. Still we met some friendly folks and their fur babies. I must admit there was quite a bit of dog poop. Hopefully dog owners will get more responsible and make the park enjoyable and safe for everyone. Regardless, Stella and I enjoyed our visit to Tom Campbell Hill Natural Park. We will return another day.
