This is probably one of the most unique places to visit in Kairouan. There is a well-known and a very old mechanism which works with a camel turning it to bring the water up. This mechanism has been in place for many years. Religious superstition believes that the well in connected to the Zamzam well in Mecca, hence locals consider the place rather sacred and keep the mechanism in place, in spite of irs being unnecessary for the current times. It is a very good experience to see the camel in action. Make sure you are seated when the camel is...

I understand that this is a long tradition but in this day & age I’m sure there are mechanical alternatives than having a camel walk in endless circles. The best thing was the old coffee shop at the place.

This is an absolute must see! And on my travels through North Africa and elsewhere, I have never seen this. A camel walks around on the second floor of a building pulling the gears that draw water up.
