"Zinciriye (Isa Bey) Madrasa - Mardin Sultan Isa Madrasa Malik Necmettin Isa bin Muzaffer Davud bin El Melik Salih, the last Artuqid Sultan who ruled in Mardin, was built in 1385. Melik Necmeddin Isa, who was seen for the first time in Mardin and fought with Timur and his army, was imprisoned in this madrasah for a while.
The Sultan Isa Madrasa, also known as Zinciriye Madrasa among the people, draws attention even from far away with its sliced domes at its eastern and western ends and its high monumental portal that coincides with its eastern side. The building, which covers a rectangular and wide area, consists of a courtyard, mosque, tomb and various additional spaces on two floors. When you enter through the portal, a section covered with a star vault is reached. On the west, there is a corridor that opens to the courtyard with the mosque. In the middle of the mosque space in the south of the corridor, there is a dome with muqarnas and squinches. The surrounding of the mihrab is embroidered with inlaid motifs. I hope that in the near future, Zinciriye Medresesi will receive the care it deserves and become a must-visit destination for those interested in history and...
Read moreSimply breathtaking; from the terrace, you get a fantastic view of the landscape and surroundings—simply magical. The only thing I find a shame is that some areas of such a historic and enchanting building are not very clean or are being used as storage! In my opinion, they could raise the entrance fee and keep the entire complex cleaner and tidier. Jewelry is sold in some places. In my opinion, the sales outlets would be better outside the site than inside the building itself. This does take away some of the magic. Overall, definitely worth seeing! Highly recommended! I hope the entire old town never loses its current...
