Parks in cities, big or small are most welcome. It was lovely to watch the young and the not-so-young men enjoying kicking balls in Summerfield Park last Saturday. Unfortunately the gender divide is still obvious. What do young and not-so-young women do? We walk or jog I suppose. There are good walking and jogging paths leading to Summerfield Park. Summerfield Park is small. We need bigger parks so that many activities can take place for all. There are several campaigns for more and bigger parks and preservation of existing ones in Birmingham. Positives: Grounds are well maintained. The basketball court and tennis courts are in really good condition. There are two children’s play areas at opposite ends ends of the park. There is an area to play cricket. Walkways & paths are all accessible & easy to walk. The harborne walk way trail begins in this park & you can do a lovely loop which includes this & the Edgbaston reservoir.
Negatives: There are problems with flytipping. In fairness the council are pretty good at resolving this and it doesn’t accumulate. There are often quite a few rough characters (homeless people, drug dealing, people using the wooded area for the toilet etc). There have also been travelling communities breaking in to the park and setting up camp- at least 5-6 times a year this is happening. There is currently a group using the park at the moment!
Over all, the park itself is lovely, but there are some obviously issues that are partly due to the location being in a rough part...
