The Dad's Army Museum in Thetford, Norfolk, is a beloved tribute to the classic British television series "Dad's Army," which aired from 1968 to 1977. The series, a comedic portrayal of the British Home Guard during World War II, was largely filmed in and around Thetford, making the museum a fitting location to celebrate its legacy.
The museum, managed by volunteers, offers an array of exhibits that transport visitors back to the 1940s. These include original props, costumes, and memorabilia from the show, as well as detailed recreations of iconic scenes, such as Captain Mainwaring's office. Interactive displays provide insight into the making of the series and the real-life history behind the Home Guard.
In addition to its permanent exhibits, the museum hosts special events, including walking tours of key filming locations around Thetford, allowing fans to see where memorable episodes were brought to life. The Dad's Army Museum not only preserves the cultural heritage of the show but also serves as a nostalgic reminder of the spirit and humor that resonated with audiences during its original broadcast and continues to charm new...

We had made a special journey over 32 miles to the museum as a special birthday treat only to find the front door locked and closed. The number ( mobile number ) on the door to call if the door was locked did not connect and when we checked with 192 the number does not exists. So we went to the library next door to enquire about opening times and was told to go back and knock on the door and shout through the letter box !!! Do doing as advised we did this and looked through the letter box to see members of staff ignoring us just chatting. We had travelling 32 miles for this experience was was total disappointing and would not advise anyone to go there. In the end we went to Bressingham steam museum who have a who hanger dedicated to dads army with real items used both in the film and TV serious.. In the end we are are still devested about dads army museum and WOULD NOT RECOMMEND this museum but would recommend bressingham...
Read moreI have always wanted to go here for years but finally managed it with friends. Free to enter, there are donation boxes and a gift shop and coffee shop. It was an excellent compact and bijou museum. The staff/volunteers were all very friendly and engaging. We were there for an hour or more but I didn't realise it. I spent quite a bit in the gift shop (thank you mr. Tax rebate). Fantastic day out and all the memories of the show and all the artifacts are well worth the visit. Be warned the statue of Capt. Mainwaring is by the river and the mural of Pvt. Pike is around the corner. The Charles Burrell museum halfway across the town centre has Jones van and there is a lecture/presentation. I tell you this because I asked several people and got several answers. Check opening times online. Absolutely the only reason to set foot in Thetford. Bus tours available for the filming locations. May go...
