My partner and I cane for dinner here on July 16th. I booked us in the week before and contacted the manager to make sure our dietary requirements could be catered for. Karen, the manager, could not have been more helpful and accommodating. When we arrived, we were seated immediately and given a choice of table. The ambiance of the restaurant was lovely and relaxing and the background music was at a nice, unobtrusive volume and not overpowering like so many places have these days. We were given a complimentary half-glass of Prosecco and some warm bread and oils, which was a lovely touch. Our food was brought to us after only around 10 minutes, which was great, and it was absolutely delicious. We had the mushroom risotto and I had an Eton mess for dessert, which was also scrumptious. There was a great choice of wines available and we were not charged for the water we had alongside our main drinks. There was a really good, friendly atmosphere in the restaurant and I loved that the tables were not all squashed in too close to each other, like in some restaurants. If ever we are staying in the area again (we were on holiday from Nottingham), this will undoubtedly be the first place I will choose to book for dinner again. Thanks for a fantastic meal and your wonderful...
Read moreI have very mixed feelings about this restaurant and I’ve erred on the low side of my rating because my expectations were high. First of all, the service was impeccable - fast, friendly with a kitchen clearly on top of a busy Saturday night. When you have high expectations, I always want to challenge the kitchen with something I know can go very wrong, and I chose the duck. Unfortunately it went very wrong. There are ways to make sure duck always comes out well - sous vide would be a good starting point if you want tender, melt in your mouth taste, with well-rendered fat and seasoning spread through the meat. Crispy skin is also a must, along with a deeply flavoured jus. Finally, if all else fails, slicing the duck super-thin will make even the toughest duck edible and enable some late seasoning to make up for the lack of jus. None of the above applies here, which is a pity because the goat’s cheese salad and the desert were excellent. I don’t know if the sous vide machines were broken that night, or if 1/4 inch slices of rubber duck are just normal fare in Thetford, or if everything other than the duck was excellent. What I do know is that this restaurant will be disappointed in this review and want to improve. Taking the duck off the menu would be...
Read moreExcellent Meal and Service.
Just opposite the Carnegie Room this restaurant was very convenient and came highly recommended. From the moment you walk in you are greeted and shown to your table. They remember exactly what you have ordered, you are offered drinks and they are served promptly even though the restaurant was almost full. Staff wear masks and the tables are nicely distanced.
The food comes hot and freshly cooked, excellently prepared and tasty.
Table is cleared efficiently and dessert is brought to you in a timely manner.
At no time do you need to keep trying to attract the attention of staff like so many restaurants because they are attentive.
I was able to obtain the bill and lay swiftly. Good value and excellent food. Smart clean restaurant comfortable and clean toilets too. It was only at the end of the meal I realised there was no music which meant we could relax and have a conversation without having to shout over background or what seems to be the norm these days foreground music.
A perfect start to the evening, looking forward to returning to this...
