Located at the quieter end of the Royal Mile, you can almost miss Wedgwood. It doesn’t shout out its presence but let’s you sneak off the bustle into its cosy interior.
The restaurant is on two floors, with the tables arranged close to one another. Going to the toilet past these tables is fun but strangely the closeness of the tables didn’t hinder our experience.
We chose a Romanian Red ( Cramele Recas, Calusari Pinot Noir 2011 £19) and settled in with some fresh bread and herbed oil.
Rabbit, venison and pancetta terrine £7.95
golden raisins and capers, piccalilli, sweetcorn ice cream. Chunky terrine packed a strong taste with the venison. The sweetcorn ice cream was a strange addition, however creamy, sweetcorn taste tempered the venison and worked well with the tangy piccalilli.
Diver caught king scallops £12.95
cauliflower korma, pistachio and peanut dust, pineapple and capers. Lightly cooked, meaty scallops with a light crunch from the cauliflower and the nut dust. The korma paired with chunks of scallops very well. Didn’t overpower at all.
palate cleanser – raspberry shot
Wild Scottish deer £23.45
pickled squash, creamed leeks, haggis, herbed barley, truffled jus. Scotland on a plate. The herbed barley worked well with leaks and haggis. The venison of course towered about everything else in taste but didn’t kill the other flavours.
Scottish beef fillet £26.95
new potato fries, seasonal vegetables served with a choice of haggis, brandy and pepper cream of truffled jus. Succulent and tender beef fillet. One of the best beef fillet’s I have ever tasted. Perfectly cooked chips and crispy vegetables. I chose the pepper cream sauce which was delicious, very creamy.
Hazelnut and blue cheese cake £6.50
spiced poached pear. Strong, robust blue cheese but cuddled in some creamy cheesecake goodness. This was amazing. One to definitely try at home.
Honey roast parsnip crème brulee £6.50
thyme ice cream and candy floss. Very light tasting thyme through this ice cream, so not one to worry about an overpowering taste.
Good strong coffee to end with some more sugary treats.
Total £103.80
Overall, a small restaurant which means you may get to know your neighbour better than you hoped but it didn’t bother us (and we usually do like a moan if tables are too close). Service was friendly, menu items were explained to us, drinks topped up when needed and not intrusively. Food was astounding with obvious care to quality of food purchased, cooked and displayed. Best fine dining meal in...
Read moreMy spouse and I decided to try something new and went here for our wedding anniversary dinner. We had high hopes based on the reviews and awards it has won. I got the vegetarian tasting menu, and my spouse had the regular tasting menu. The food was just 'okay' and the portions were absolutely miniscule. One of my courses (roasted cauliflower) had literally one small floret of cauliflower. The courgette course had 2 thin slices of courgette. 1-3 bites of mediocre food with a wait time of at least 20+ minutes between each course was excruciating as the food was neither worth the time nor the price. The cheese course we ordered had several non-vegetarian cheeses which I only noticed when we received the cheese descriptions right before the course, so I asked if we'd be able to do it with just vegetarian cheeses. They said 'maybe', they'll check, and walked off. 10 minutes later they came back with the cheese course which only had 2 vegetarian cheeses, and they said they gave us a wee bit more brie to make up for it. They didn't tell us this ahead of time otherwise I wouldn't have opted for the cheese course at that point. The cheese course for 2 was about the size of a 1 person cheese course at Aurora in Leith. The servers were very short, didn't explain the dishes well beyond what was written on the menu, and not very attentive. The place was very loud despite it being a small room. They also didn't do anything at all to acknowledge our anniversary (not even a 'happy anniversary') which I made them aware of prior to our booking. I also do not drink often, and when I asked, they said they couldn't make any mocktails. The only somewhat interesting soft drinks they had apart from the usual coke, sprite, etc. was either elderflower or rhubarb presse which was just fine. My partner and I didn't even stay for coffee, and they ran out of fudge. The dessert course was so poor that I didn't even finish, and I ALWAYS finish dessert. It took over 2.5 hours without the coffee and fudge and with us eating VERY quickly. Safe to say we won't be recommending Wedgewood. It was immensely disappointing and didn't at all deliver on what we thought would be a...
Read moreWe were on our way to the Mussel Inn as I adore seafood but got very distracted by the menu and I had seen the excellent reviews...and we were not disappointed. As it was just lunch we went for just a main and glass off sparkling water with lemon. Waitresses were all lovely and welcoming and left us to decide on the fillet of beef with barley which I think was reduced in beef broth or marrow bone, cabbage with braised oxtail and spring onion. My partner went with the pork belly cabbage and onion with a melting buttery sauce. We ordered a potato terrine on the side. Everything was melt in the mouth and I highly reccomend not missing an opportunity to have a food experience rather than just lunch out or dinner. The beef was divine and the what I'd call perfectly cooked. For me medium rare is got to be pink all the way through to the edges which is hard to achieve as with fillet it can come out quite rare when they cut into 3 presentable pieces the middle is often just red and too rare. Not here...divine. swapping forks of course with my partner had us both agreeing we made perfect decision to not only change our venue but make the correct decision on choosing from the other very tempting mains they had. We will be back...definitely go here...you will not regret. Expect over the the £100 for the bill if you want to enjoy 3 courses with your partner but if you just fancy a little treat but dont want to be too out of pocket go for the lunch specials. Wine list was fantastic aswel. Just Go...
