I want to occupy the meadows as a spirit To hide in the trees; flicker through the leaves in summer, to watch the people drink, laugh and play, and to hope to feel the sun that passes though me. I would drift up and watch the day pass The people come and leave The warm night fall onto the grass in the city and find the people dancing, smoking and kissing in newly born dark I would watch the summer die see the people come less and less As the time grows colder And their terms start, Their jobs begin I would watch the leaves die And the grass slow I would sit under the autumn stars in the catching cold And enjoy the screaming aloneness The stark abandonment of my home I would glide round the perimeter of my home As the darkening days go by Holding on to every little tree, as they are all home to me I will die with them We fall deeper into the misty unknown of winter The people I used to see, have been gone for months Their faces fading The loneliness gets old now I still talk to my trees It gets me by But I still cry little tears of snow And cover the ground in my white sorrow This January is sunny And melts this blanket I rise out of the ground Where I spent my grieving months And I talk to the little birds that have woken me up I speak to them of time, of the stars that I missed While I was laying in the roots I would watch the students come back from their holidays Dance amongst their walk And lean towards their windows from my trees I would watch them settle back into their flats in the winter sun Preparing for spring is no small task so I am busy in these next few months Planting seeds and feeding the trees I would lay in the still cold grass Under one of my youngest And see the evidence of change The mountain dragons roar in the pentlands And we all celebrate spring Each day now, I fly high up above my tress With the birds And watch the city bloom in every way The nights are sweet now, and so is the air We made it through winter Late spring people come to visit They lay on the grass And stare up at the sky Unaware of me, sitting in one of my trees nearby I am happy in...

When coming to Edinburgh, the hustle and bustle of city life is something that one expects, but a giant, grassy park, bordered with cherry blossom trees, not so much.
It is a great place to get away from everything and to relax. The park itself is used for many different events and occasions. At certain times of the year, they hold events within the confines of the park. During the Spring is probably the best time to visit, whilst the cherry blossoms are blooming. The Japanese Society and the department of the university often hold flower viewing picnics which involves having picnics under the blossoming flowers. During the summer season, you'll find the entire park taken over by people sunbathing, having barbecues, or just relaxing with friends.
There are many schools and events who practise sports, performances and exercise within the park as well.
The only thing I would recommend against is walking alone at night. Though many people walk these paths, it's not...
Read moreThe Meadows - the ideal place to relax in the sun, listen to some tunes, meet old friends and new, have a BBQ along with some beers and wine. Amazingly this used to be a reservoir for Edinburgh's Old Town, now it belongs to the people of the city and they do a great job of taking care of it.
All throughout the year there are events and fairs on at the Meadows. Even when there is not you can pop down and will be sure to see lots of other Edinburgh folk catching some rays and enjoying company.
The only problem is that with no distinctive landmarks and such a vast open space it can be hard to find your friends. Luckily there is an app for exactly that coming out soon.
I used to spend a lot of time here when I was studying at Edinburgh Uni and that demographic adds to the laid back friendly atmosphere that people tend to have here. If you are out for a short walk in the city centre or fancy a sit down this is a lovely area. If you have a frisbee, rug, football, rugby ball or hoola hoop you should take...
