Cracking local bar. Good balance of micro and macro - Lots of good fine ales and craft beers along with the usual big brewery lagers and German beers. There's usually 3 taps of guest ales along with a fridge of nice bottled beers such as Williams Bros, Stewarts etc. They serve food too and while it's not a huge or adventurous menu it's good hearty pub food. I've had the nachos and the burger both of which were plentiful and tasty - good value for money as well. I used to drink here a good many years ago when I played for Western Hockey Club - this was our local. Since then the bar has been refurbished into something of a trendy student--friendly bar (is any bar NOT student friendly?) but I'm happy to report that it retains a lot of its "local charm" and warmth for those of us aging curmudgeons that simply want to relax with some friends over a fine ale or read a book in the corner ( there's often people knitting!). There's 2 big screen tvs in the upstairs bar for sports fans and I'm not sure what's downstairs now - I've not been down since the refurb, but I know they have a weekly pub quiz (no phones allowed!!).
I've since moved back to the area and am really happy to have the Argyle as my local - it's a comfortable, friendly atmosphere, catering for all ages, has a great beer selection and it forms the last stop on my Golden Mile beer walk :) The Red Squirrel - The Hanging Bat - Cloisters...
Read moreUsed to be quality but seems to have changed ownership. My local is dead.
No BT Sport (darts and golf on tonight, no football... nice one.) No food Tiny round tables (used to be oblong, therefore there was more space and bigger groups could visit) No sofa anymore No board games Bad music (used to be quite a quirky selection as the bar staff could have their own playlist on (at least that's what I assume seeing as it was so unique))
Even the fact that the candles are now not in old wine bottles with multitudes of wax flowing down them is an issue to me. Everything is so bland.
The Argyle had a great communal atmosphere and now it's just flat.
Looks to have changed simply in order to fit more punters in and attempt to steal custom from The Earl. I went here as an ALTERNATIVE to The Earl.
There are now no decent pubs left in Marchmont. An absolute...
Read moreUnfortunately the argyle is no longer my local pub, but I really enjoyed it while it was. The staff are friendly and they have some interesting beers, normally 2-3 guest ales and a range of bottles. The cocktails are good! And used to be in a student deal (although not sure if this still happens...?)
Also worth popping in for the food!! Burgers are very tasty, nachos are great to share while you are having a few drinks with friends and the breakfast is excellent! During the six nations before now they have done a breakfast deal which was good.
Basically a great little pub! I never normally go downstairs but if it looks full there is likely to be some more space so...
