I travelled to Hastings from where i live in north Hertfordshire. I was dismayed at the state of Ecclesbourne Glen, having spent many many wonderful times there in the 1970's when it was a wild, unspoilt paradise, where few people even knew about.
Yesterday I found it severely damaged! The paths are like quagmires, and are obviously severely overused. Probably by people who stay at the caravan park which has grown massively since I remember it. The caravan park reminds me of the swathes of Devon and Cornwall which have been totally ruined by the same eyesore.
Later in the day i was hoping to return to town by the eastcliff path, and it was there i had my greatest shock. It wasnt the cliff collapse- which although dramatic is a natural feature of this landscape - but rather it was the alarming encroachment of the caravan park, its new building and unbelievably, a carpark! It makes me wonder whether on future visits, Ecclesbourne Glen will cease to exist as a nature reserve at all.
How on earth has this been allowed to happen - surely there must be some corruption going on in the local council!
How dumb is it to exploit a place for its beauty, whilst ruining it in the process!...

Read moreA wide open hill easily reached from the fernicular railway located in Rock a Nore Road, or by the steps at the southern end of Tackleway. Once at the top there are splendid views of the English Channel, across the Old Town to the West Hill, and across the bay to Eastbourne and Beach Head. Weather permitting. The East Hill has the remains of an Iron Age hill fort at the top, which is still marked by a low earth bank. There is also a permanent barbeque area inside. The hill continues eastwards with many up and downs as.it.joins up.with Ecclesbourne Glen and then.the Firehills as you approach Fairlight. A great place to just walk, in all weather's, enjoying the views or maybe take a picnic with you on...
