It's an attractive little shop but much of what it sells is very expensive and comes across as impractical artefacts made by dilettantes. The service is to match.
The service on the most recent visit was very poor - unnecessarily intrusive without actually paying attention. Was asked 3 times in 2 minutes if I needed help, and politely declined each time. Perhaps the person serving thought I had serious special needs, or that I was going to steal something.
At the counter I counted the change in my hand, read out the price, and said I'd get the rest from my purse. The person serving did not acknowledge this (she was knitting or fiddling about with something of the kind), then suddenly announced the price, took the change off the counter, counted it - incorrectly - and told me the balance, as though I was unable to count and had not spoken at all.
The situation became more confused and embarrassing, with another customer waiting and the server smirking and telling me in a baby-voice what I needed to do. I'm not accustomed to having money taken from me before I have assembled the full amount, nor the assumption being made that I am illiterate and innumerate.
I came back after the other customers had gone and asked what the server had been doing. She said she'd been trying to help, and kept repeating this, but smirking. I said I had found her interference unnecessary and confusing, at which she took the money from the till, put it on the counter, told me to have the card as a present, that she "Did not want to have this conversation", and told me to leave the shop.
I am therefore posting this message here. I left the shop to titters, hand over mouth, eyeball-rolling, and pretend-shock intakes of...
