One of London's hidden gems! Victorian 1870's houses built for railway workers. Became famous during the 1970's when the Inner London Education Authority removed it's residents in order to demolish it to make way for a new school. However, this did not come to pass due to one resident who refused to move and moved in a bunch of squatters who formed a housing cooperation. They successfully liaised with the the ILEA winning the right to reside there. They also landscaped the derelict WW2 bombsite next-door to them into the gardens. Predominantly for the growing of vegetables for the square's vegetarian café. During the 1990's they started to turn the gardens into a quirky tranquil pleasure gardens that spills over into the square. By 1998 they won the rights to buy their homes. A real rags to riches successful power to the people story! It holds a yearly Summer Festival. In 2018 it had Twelfth Night performances here and has had jazz and choirs here too. I am so pleased that local residents have created this 'pleasure garden', which takes its name from the famous Vauxhall pleasure gardens that were frequented by Duke of Devonshire and where he more than likely met...
Read moreInteresting community featuring plants that spills out on to the paving but a few of the plants have been left and not been pruned so the plants have been left to go wild and hence it's bit untidy but there efforts bring a smile to the beholder's face and I would give a 💯 percent for effort and creativity and innovation in creating a kind of green euphoria within each house holder's space that they have access to. I say a big thank you for...
