During our recent visit to Kensington Gardens, we made a stop at the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fountain. Given Princess Diana’s legacy and the significance of the memorial, we arrived with high expectations, imagining something more majestic and imposing. Instead, what we found was a modest, modern tribute — one that emphasizes reflection and accessibility over grandeur.
The fountain is designed as a large, oval-shaped stream made of 545 pieces of Cornish granite, with water gently flowing down both sides before meeting in a calm pool at the bottom. It invites people to walk around it, touch the water, or even dip their feet in on warm days — which many children and families were doing. The interactive aspect of the design encourages a sense of community and peace, in line with the spirit of Diana herself.
Still, it left us a bit underwhelmed.
