Read moreThere are few things in life more British than a Sunday roast in a pub with a bit of character. Unfortunately, The Bunch of Grapes in London offers neither character nor roast — unless you count character as QR codes and the distinct aroma of culinary apathy.
I arrived with hope and left with indigestion and trust issues.
We ordered two pints of Asahi — self-service, of course. No waiters in sight, unless you count the teenager tapping through Deliveroo orders behind the bar. Apparently, this is a “heritage pub,” but the only heritage I witnessed was a deep-rooted commitment to disinterest. If the ghosts of this building’s past exist, they’ve moved to Wetherspoons out of shame.
I went for the pork roast — a brave, foolish choice. What arrived was…well, let’s call it a portrait of a roast, because it sure wasn’t the real thing. The pork? Two tiny bites, so tough I thought I was chewing on a belt made from Winston Churchill’s boot leather. The pie? Burnt. The kind of burn that says, “We forgot about this two hours ago and microwaved it into a new dimension.”
There was cauliflower. Not cauliflower cheese. Just cauliflower. Like someone had yelled “cheese” across the kitchen and figured that was good enough.
Nice potatoes, I’ll give them that. But the carrots were cold. Not room temp — cold, like they’d been chilling in the fridge wondering what they did to deserve this life. The plate, however, was molten hot, leading me to suspect my meal had been sitting under a heat lamp so long it developed abandonment issues. And the cabbage? If you told me it was shredded iceberg lettuce left over from a Subway footlong, I’d believe you. I wouldn’t feed it to pigs. Pigs deserve better.
After pushing the sad remnants of this wartime ration around the plate, I brought it up to the bar like some tragic battlefield messenger, hoping for a shred of human interaction or empathy. The man behind the bar — a monument to indifference — looked at me and said:
“I’m sorry…but what do you want me to do for you?”
Not a question. A statement of defeat. The final nail in the gravyless coffin.
Worst hospitality I’ve had in London. And there wasn’t really anything else to...
Read moreVisiting London from the States and searched for fish and chips near us... This popped up and they even had a sign at the door touting their fish and chips, so far so good... We walked in and after waiting a few minutes to be seated, ask what appear to be a manager and she said to take any table. After waiting a few more minutes, I want back to her and asked if there was table service or did we need to order at the bar... She informed me that we needed to order at the bar... Would have been nice for her to say that when we asked about the table... After a good 30 mins and seeing others around us who came in after us get their food, we asked a waitress who said the kitchen was backed up and she would check... After another 5 minutes or so, she came back and said it would a few more minutes, we told her others who ordered after us were getting their food, she went back and we finally got our food at least 45 mins after we arrived. I got the steak and ale pie which we very favorable, but the chips were cold in spite of the pie being blazing hot. There was a lettuce garnish which had a piece of brown stem (see picture) my companion had the fish and chips and while the potion size was huge, the flavor disappointed both of us. There were two ladies sitting next to us and we struck up a conversation. One lady had ordered the fish and chips and agreed it was nothing special (don't understand all the reviews raving about it, as I have had better fish and chips in the states) and the other lady ordered a salad which didn't match the description in the menu. When she complained, the manager offered a refund of the salad, but made her pay for the chips she had ordered... The manager was very rude and to me made it seem like the customer was to blame for complaining. Even if I lived in London, I wouldn't go back. Any restaurant can have a bad day, but having worked with number of restaurant this seemed to run deeper as none of the wait staff seemed very happy. I almost never give 1 stars, but this place...
