Unfortunately a legendary market on a slow decline, caused up to a point by on-line shopping but this is not the real root cause.
The market days are every Tuesday, Thursday & Saturday, both Tuesday's & Thursday's market days, have now minimal custom & a low % of stalls out.
On Saturday's with good weather there's a full high % of stalls & quite busy custom now & then but not regularly.
The main cause of the decline, is that it's not attractive at all for 'ALL' locals or outside visiting custom.
There's no managed balance of retail goods being sold, no regulation, on all 3 market days there's a very high % of just 'Women's clothes' & virtually nothing else, it's now called to the locals: Roman Rd 'Jumble Sale'.
Both rows of shops of the Roman Rd Market area are of a very high % of Asian businesses with most just catering for Asians, again no regulation, apart from a couple of cafes, so no attraction at all for new caucasian custom, also no attraction at all as a whole both shops & market stalls to attract any outside investment for caucasian custom & business other than cheap women's clothes...
Such a shame, the mass decline of what was then a very very busy & attractive market place in the past 1950's - 1980's decades, then the market was selling virtually everything for 'Everyone' absolutely packed every single Saturday throughout every weekend, month & year whatever the...
Read moreSadly, this market has declined so much over the years. Stalls are scarce... and with oddments of shoes and piles of clothing, including household bric a brac, it feels, forgotten and unloved. There are newer shops just outside the market consisting of a Bakery (great to see) which make their own bread, Cafes, wholefood shops which have a good range of fruits and vegetables but still, are extortionate on price. The ATMs of which there are only 2 (that are free) rarely work. The idea store is always out of recycling bags, regardless of the day you pop in. The fruit, veg, fish, burger van, womens underwear, flower stalls, shoe shop, mens clothing shop, are long gone. Roman rd market needs investment and someone with foresight and vision to get Makers and Artisans, of foods, homemade fayre, babies and kids clothing, gifts, flowers, clothing shops, greetings and cards, as well as small businesses, cooperative traders, independant farmers/farm shops for meat and/or vegetables, cheeses, etc, into this space, without hiking up the pitch or rental costs. People need a reason to return and the 'hamletspeople' need a reason to feel proud of where they live so let's make this market a thriving concern again, just as it used to be, every Saturday, Tuesday...
Read moreRoman road market is not what it was years ago. There are a couple of stalls that may have some brand name bargains but not that many. There are a few stalls selling more on trend clothing that are busy, but as for the days of a good bargain not many are to be had here. Roman was one of the best places to go and shop on a Saturday for a bargain for years and years but over the past few years its got less and less busy and a lot of the long standing traders have gone.
The pie mash shop is still the best tho and well worth a visit. Superdrug, Poundland and costa coffee are there along with hairdressers and barbers and beauty shops. There are some other shops that may be of interest but nothing that is any different from a usual high street -carpet shop fish and chips , electronics, sweets, shoes, sunbeds.
The other part of Roman that doesnât have the market in is ok- quite a few nice trendy cafes and shops. Good independent groceryâs selling all the usual stuff plus nice breads etc. Nail bars and sunbeds- there are quite a few. Baby shop selling prams, aquarium shop and a vape shop plus...
