Wonderful few hours spent in Caerleon, visiting the baths the amphitheatre the museum and The Village bakery and cafe at the top end of Museum St. The baths were very interesting and the way they've done it with the projection of the water and swimmers is quite something. You walk around on elevated platforms and there is even what I think is a wishing toilet. Well, it seems people have thrown coins into what appears to be a roman toilet. The Amphitheatre is a short walk and is quite interesting too. A great place to let children run about in the middle. We didn't have time to go the barracks but they do look to be another interesting site. The reason we didn't have time is because certain members of the family wanted to visit The Village Bakery! Worth it though. The museum was great and has a lot of information and a lot of amazing artifacts, also it has a garden to sit out in. A very good place to visit, interesting and well...
Read moreExcellent! Having spent the summer in Italy, which was actually lacking in Roman related museums, we decided to give here a go to see an actual Roman solider. And despite only being half an hour down the road it didn’t disappoint! We spent around an hour in here looking around, dressing up in play clothes and a good 15 to 20 men’s speaking to the gentleman outside who had extremely good and interesting knowledge on Roman history. On his recommendation we went across the road to another free to visit area and he also recommend another nearby Roman village that we’re going to visit next weekend. FREE to get into but we put a nice donation in the box as it’s worth the money. Was a steady stream of people who were coming to visit but it wasn’t crowded. Got a magnet for £1.50 at the gift shop was is cheap by gift shop standards.. will prob come back in the future and will watch out for any...
Read moreWe took advantage of nearby free on street parking for our campervan. If none available there is a coach park with additional large spaces in town. There are dropped kerbs and dimpled paving at road crossing points. There was a pedestrian crossing available. There are 3 steps up to the museum but there is a ramp to the side. Inside there is good access all around. The reception desk is immediately opposite but just step to the right and beyond the donations box the museum reveals itself. There are many interesting and unique displays of Roman artifacts. Roman legionnaries stand imposingly inside and schoolchildren may be able to meet a Roman Legionary actor (by arrangement). Of particular interest was some of the bronze pans and glassware. Many of the pieces were both delicate and intricate. There is a small shop aimed at childrens purchases. There is also a fine looking...
