Sheringham beach is a beautiful place, still relatively unspoilt and a hidden gem along the North Norfolk coast. There are beaches situated directly in front of local public houses and cafés. Historic and modern buildings are next to each other and offer a wide range of amenities. Sheringham museum is worth a visit, the promenade is often a place of entertainment or concerts. If you want to sit and contemplate the world as a whole, then the prom has seating areas dotted all the way along. The other beaches are a bit of a distance from the front of the town, these beaches offer a slightly more secluded and quieter atmosphere. They are still accessible from the promenade with steps or slopes leading down to the stones. These ones are usually frequented by people who want a quieter, but calmer experience. The beaches are clean and give a wide choice of areas. There are the ones close to the fishermen's slopes, these are busy working beaches, with fishing boats, crab pots and nets. The large granite blocks that act as breakwaters have weathered in and no longer look out of place, whilst the beach itself has a flint shore with sand that is golden, at low tide the chalk rockbeds appear and offer a glimpse of marine life in microcosm in rock pools. Giving children and adults alike hours of fun, exploring. The second sands appear at low tide and for a few hours only. The beautiful sunsets are just the icing on the cake and provide a visual feast at the end of the day. There are places to eat along the prom and places where you can buy soft drinks and ice creams. Fish and chips, the quintessential beach food after gritty sandwiches, are freshly cooked in nearby cafés or from shops in the town. All in all you can have a well rounded day enjoying the sun sea and sand, importantly, toilets are situated in the buildings dotted along the prom, with fresh water taps for rinsing off feet etc or giving dogs a drink. I happen to adore watching people walking along the prom, I sit on the walls running along side, and or on one of the benches provided. People watching is fascinating and can occupy me for hours, as long as I can have drinks and food! I'm obviously biased as I live in the area and have enjoyed activities and days at the beach for years. However, that shouldn't detract from believing all that is in this review, I'm not in the pay of the tourist board or local...
Read moreAs per usual when you go away and take the family dog all you get in beach wise is the crappy ones and this was no different. Parked up near The Crown pub and looked for the sign so we could take the dogs on the beach. So obviously there is the massive bit for families and rightly so and then the bits for the dogs. We decided to go to the closest beach and not walk through the crowds.
So walking past the beach huts and looking over the side all that was there are massive rocks, no beach what so ever. Granted the tide was in but no beach. So we walked till we got to the end of the concrete walk way where the ground just became a waste land to scramble over to the beach.
After negotiating this we got to the beach a very pebbly beach and water breakers which made the beach look like Saving Private Ryan. Yes they looked good and I took a picture and yes the do a job so I'm not complaining just adding information to the review.
After this the beach did become more attractive with a mixture of sandy parts and fine crunched up shells that got in the footwear. There were very few people on this beach and 95% had dogs with them. Also there was a dead seal washed up so if you have a dog that likes rolling in dead stuff keep an eye out.
So all in all if you want a beach where you have to become Bear Grylls to get to it this is for you but if you're a little unstable and not built like a mountain goat look for somewhere else.
But a message for the council or who ever is in charge of the beaches. A lot of people with dogs holiday here and and put a lot of money into the area to help keep you going. It would be nice to make the beaches where you allow dogs more accessible. It's not nice to make people who own dogs a burden and it does put people off...
