We've been coming to Sheringham for the last few years and we always go to the Crown. It was nice to see in the afternoon that live entertainment was back on the outside stage. Good atmosphere, good drinks.
In the evening, we went there for dinner. Standard pub fare: I had the steak and ale pie and it did not disappoint. The service started off okay - we were shown to our table by a masked waiter who brought us drinks and took our order. I have no complaints about the meal or the drinks but the service plummeted downhill after that. We were wanting more drinks. However, it's table service only at present because of covid restrictions and no one was coming to take any further orders. A waitress came to clear our table and we tried to order through her. She simply said that she'd send over some bar staff to do this but still no one came. In the end we decided to give up and leave but we still needed the bill. No one came! So we tried the technique of putting on our coats and preparing to leave. Still no one came. A couple of people in our group actually did leave but still they seemed uninterested in serving us at all. But there were staff just standing around chatting. It was extraordinary. Finally I was left with no choice and went to the bar directly to ask for the bill and finally we were sorted. A couple nearby had also been waiting to order more drinks but also gave up with the lack of service.
So I've knocked off one star for being deprived of additional drinks, and another for the delay in bringing us the bill. Nevertheless I feel I would come back next time when hopefully things would be back to normal.
Update (16th August 2022): We returned to The Crown in the evening for dinner. The place has been done up and has new decking outside. I didn't get the chance to look all round it but it seems reasonably smart. I think the outdoor stage has gone, which would be a shame if true, as the artists I'd experienced in the past were usually entertaining enough. However, the biggest disappointment was the menu which has been significantly reduced since last time. The steak and ale pie that I always went for is no longer on the menu. Neither is the specials board. Instead I opted to try the lasagne. This was nothing to write home about - just some flat mass produced pasta with a sauce that clung to the sides of the dish it was presented in. It was described as containing beef mince and pork mince but I struggled to find any mince at all. It was served with garlic bread and salad but I was glad I added the chunky chips as an extra.
Overall, I was disappointed by this visit, given that we had primarily gone for the food and had bypassed other establishments because I...
Read moreI recently had the pleasure of visiting The Crown Cafe in Sheringham with a group of friends and professors, and I must say it was an absolutely delightful experience. From the delicious food to the excellent service, our time at The Crown Cafe was nothing short of exceptional.
Let's start with the star of the show: the food. The menu offered a wide variety of options, and each dish we ordered was not only visually appealing but also bursting with flavor. The chefs at The Crown Cafe have clearly mastered the art of creating delectable meals. Whether it was the perfectly cooked chicken or the flavorful mashy peas, every bite was a true delight for our taste buds. The quality of ingredients was evident, and the dishes were expertly prepared. We left the cafe with satisfied appetites and fond memories of the fantastic food we had.
Equally impressive was the service we received. The staff members were friendly, attentive, and genuinely seemed to enjoy their work. From the moment we walked in, we were warmly greeted and promptly seated. Our server was knowledgeable about the menu and offered helpful recommendations based on our preferences. Throughout the evening, they ensured that our glasses were never empty and that we had everything we needed to enjoy our meal. The attentive yet unobtrusive service added a touch of elegance to the overall experience.
The ambiance of The Crown Cafe was cozy and inviting. The tasteful decor, coupled with soft background music, created a relaxed atmosphere that was perfect for our group. The seating arrangements allowed for comfortable conversations, and we appreciated the attention given to each table's privacy. The cafe had a warm and welcoming vibe that made us feel right at home.
Lastly, I must mention the group aspect of our visit. The Crown Cafe proved to be an excellent choice for our gathering. The service was efficient, and the food was served promptly, allowing us to enjoy a seamless and enjoyable dining...
Read moreThis is a Stonegate owned establishment, and Stonegate are Slug & Lettuce, Tattershall Castle, Yates, Yates's and Walkabout, to name but a few commercial strings to their destructive bow! They refurbished the old Crown and it reopened this spring, and as can be seen from the many negative reviews here and on Trust Pilot, is a total rip off, not fitting into the little sea side town locality and not serving any of its locals. It is, quite bluntly, a place where tourists go with deep, holiday pockets, and where locals avoid. I am local, and North Norfolk born and bred, with Sheringham as my home. We cannot afford London priced drinks, with a pint of Peroni at £6.00 and basic lagers at over £5.00! Tap coke at £3.75?! This is madness, and its food is over priced, and pre-prepared, with nothing freshly made! What is equally insulting is that there were local rumours that this pub would offer a locals' loyalty card, whih never happened! Having said that, no local I know would be seen dead in the place, and ow do you discount vastly over priced drinks?! It is funny just how many once only reviewers seem to leave 5* reviews for this sham, and never, ever leave another review! On Trust Pilot it was clear that someone from management also left a glowing 5* review, with photos of the meals, apparently, eaten, and praising staff, refurbishment, and location, only to be caught out because he left a dozen reviews, all glowing 5* for other Stonegate pubs up and down the country! I am sure if you look here on Google, you will see similar abuse of the platform! It is high time Stonegat got out of our town, or stopped ripping us off! We will boycott this autumn/winter, as we have since it opened, and then see how they do without customers, and their sky high, Londo pricing! £6.00 a pint, when you can buy the same drink for around £3.50 in 'real' local venues!! Profiteering...
