Long Sands Beach, Tynemouth: A surfer's paradise with a family-friendly vibe

Long Sands Beach in Tynemouth is a real gem. If you're into surfing, or even just watching the surfers ride the waves, you'll love it here. It's a real hotspot for surf schools and enthusiasts alike, whatever the weather. Honestly, even in the dead of winter, I've seen people braving the cold in wetsuits, with the occasional crazy kid going for a swim. Personally, I'm more of a "keep your coat on" type of person when it's chilly, but it's nice to see such passion for the waves.

It's a different scene at weekends. The beach is spread out, so while it does get busy, especially with families and kids running around, it never feels too cramped. You can always find your own spot of sand to relax on. It's lovely for a family day out, with plenty of space for the little ones to let off steam. And even when it gets busy, the atmosphere remains relaxed and welcoming. You'll get that real seaside feel.

Now for the not so great bits. As someone who prefers a bit of peace and quiet, the weekend crowds can sometimes be a bit much, especially if you're after a peaceful stroll. And let's not forget the classic British weather - if you're planning a visit, be prepared for wind and the occasional downpour. But if you can brave it, the views and atmosphere will more than make up for it. All in all, Long Sands is a great beach for surfers and families alike - just don't forget...

The northern end of the award winning Long Sands beach is a stunning stretch of golden sand, backed by low dunes.  In summer it is one of the most popular spots on the North East coast. People come from far and wide to build sand castles, sunbathe or splash about in the clean waters.

It is also one of the areas best surfing beaches. The powerful waves here have made it a popular destination for surfing, and the national surfing championships have been held here. You can get your surfing lessons here and stop of for refreshments overlooking the beach at the surfers bar.

Adjacent to the beach, on the other side of Grand Parade is Tynemouth Park, a family fun park, with a boating lake, crazy golf and themed children’s play areas.  The Blue Reef Aquarium, also nearby, has a good variety of interesting sea-life.  Whatever time of year you come here, there’ll be lots to keep children...

Tynemouth Longsands is one of the many beautiful North East beaches. It attracts people from across the region with its stunning golden sands that stretch for a mile, as well as rocks, dunes and cliffs. The Blue Flag award-winning beach is popular all-year round, offering great walks, views, and a sure-fire way to blow away those cobwebs. When the sun is out in the summer, it is a perfect place to soak up the sun, play beach games, and splash about in the sea.

Longsands has developed a national reputation as surf destination and has staged national championships. It is a great place to learn to surf with lessons and board hire available. The beach has even been used for Premier League football training by Newcastle United, and has featured in the Hollywood movie "Goal". It is one of the most painted and photographed beaches in the country and the view looking north is...
