My grandson likes dinosaurs so myself, my 2 daughters and their children - grandson aged 3 and granddaughter aged 3 months booked tickets for the exhibition.
Firstly, this isn't an exhibition for young children - although there were a lot there - it is fossils and skeletons mixed with the normal fare of taxidermy. It's probably great for young paleontologists.
Secondly, my daughter booked online, it cost £7.70 per adult, she had to indicate a specific time slot at the time of booking and therefore believed that it was necessary to arrive at the time she had booked.
As she has a baby we were cutting it fine by the time she arrived, and we couldn't go in without her as she had the links, so we had to rush up a rather steep hill. We queued behind people paying on arrival who were charged only £7.00 - why had we paid 10% more? (She had also paid for her parking on line but was only told on arrival that she would still need something on display in the vehicle so that the parking attendants would know she had already paid so she had to go back to her car.)
I am disabled, I'm not in a wheelchair but walking is painful so I was in pain from the outset because of the hill and because of rushing up it, as a result I was unable to raise any interest in a rather dry exhibition so I told my family I would wait outside, easier said than done because there were no signposts to the exit and it took me a while to get out, there was no information about which floor the exit was on around the lift or on the rudimentary list of what was on each floor near the (closed) front door.
After sitting for a while on a bench immediately outside the entrance I made my way to the bottom of the hill, there was a walkway with a handrail but the ground was furrowed from years of walking on it so I used the steps, there was temporary fencing adjacent but I hope that this was not intended as a substitute for a handrail.
I got to what I think had been the stables, there are a couple of cafes but they seemed to be identical with their food and pricing although I think one may have had a larger menu. Both invited me to help myself to cake, most of it unidentified and no information on allergens, but with a walking stick in one hand and a handbag in the other that wasn't going to happen (I suppose I could have asked but anyone that suffers from chronic pain will know that when you are having a flare up, you don't trust yourself to have to ask favours from the establishment that caused the flare up in case you are rebuffed).
My daughters eventually found me sitting at a table with no refreshment and determined we would not be lunching there which meant we didn't get to spend any time in the grounds (which from memory are lovely). The final disappointment was wanting to use the toilet, the disabled toilet (which l do need for the side rails) had a sign that said it was solely for the use of people in need of a hoist or a centrally located toilet, in other words not me, and that I should go to the other side of the courtyard to request access. I decided against the possibility of having a stranger determining whether or not I am sufficiently disabled.
So, if you are fit, like taxidermy and fossils then you'll be fine and it's a lovely setting - although I suggest you don't book online.
But if your children are younger or you have any mobility issues then give the hall a wide berth, it is...
