Appley Tower is a fascinating structure with an equally fascinating history, it sits right next to the beach and can be seen from the ferry at it approaches the island, I always remember my sister and I looking out for the tower as kids and getting excited that our holiday was about to begin, Appley Park (just behind the tower) has beautiful woodland walks and green fields, a great place to relax to the sound of waves on the beach, or walk your dog, there's a large car park (pay and display) and public toilets near by, as well as a beach café and ice-cream shop that also sells buckets and spades and other beach items.

Beautiful little tower and we were lucky enough to be there when it was actually open to go inside! The chap there was very kind and was explaining to me that it was built as a folly for the estate, so they would essentially use it as a glorified beach hut. Not much to see inside, but he was telling me that there are plans to renovate and reinstall a mezzanine and a spiral staircase, which will allow future visitors to access the roof again.

Always been part of the beach experience at Ryde, now restored and open to the public. Houses exhibitions from local artists. Having lived on the island and played on and around the tower as a child , it was a pleasure to return and go inside and and climb the inside staircase and go outside after 70 years! Afternoon tea can be served on top if prebooked.

This Vicorian folly is hard to miss at the end of Ryde beach. Built as a "lookout" over the sea. Ostensibly to aid in witnessing a possible invasion it was also accompanied by a now demolished pier. Built in Tudory/Gothic style it was once part of a much larger estate with some structures still remaining. About 20 stroll from the main harbour in town.

Been visiting the island since a child as my grandmother lived in Ryde, It was a dream to go inside Appley tower for so many years that finally came true at the age of 40 and it didn't disappoint, I would buy it if I could so it could exist forever.
