Just off the beaten path from the cruise terminal lies a hidden gem for car enthusiasts - the Dundee Museum of Transport! While they'll be moving shop to a grander location in the old tram terminal soon, this current spot is a must-visit for anyone who digs a little automotive history.
Don't let the size fool you - this museum packs a punch! Run by passionate locals who clearly love what they've created, it feels more like a labor of love than just another tourist trap. The entry fee might seem small, but you can practically feel it going towards preserving local history and keeping this gem motoring along.
It's not just about shiny chrome and vintage engines, though. This museum offers a real slice of Dundee life. You'll see everything from local manufacturing triumphs to quirky contraptions that'll make you chuckle. The crown jewel (or should we say, gear head?) is undoubtedly their replica of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang! But wait, there's more! This beauty boasts some original parts and even a connection to the film's actors and the town itself.
Whether you're a gearhead or just curious about Dundee's past, the Dundee Museum of Transport is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. So ditch the usual tourist traps and support this passionate group keeping history alive! You...
Read moreBrilliant place which uses the space well and presents the exhibits in a very logical, organized, and accessible way. You can easily spend 2 or 3 hours here and learn a lot not just about transport in Dundee but also globally. They have two Ford Model Ts, one of which was manufactured in Canada and exported to Australia as part of the imperial preference trading system which existed between Britain and the British colonies, so a nice bit of social and economic history to go along with the exhibits. That is true of most of the exhibits which have a considerable amount of ephemera attached to them which is informative and interesting. I particularly liked the railway section and the fantastic model railway but the cars, buses and bikes are a tremendous attraction. The old Hillman Imp panda car, the early prototypes for an electric car, Sir Clive Sinclair's C5, the Model Ts, and the Norton motorbike with sidecar were my personal favorites. Nice atmosphere to the place too, and cosy little cafe with good tea and cake! Do yourself a favour and pay a visit. You...
Read moreThis is a transport museum with a lot of passion behind it (have a chat with one of the volunteers, they're very knowledgeable and a great source of information!). It's set over 3 galleries and has an assortment of different vehicles from cars to bikes and even a bus (don't miss the horse-drawn tram ready for restoration tucked away in the corner!). Have a good look around because there is an amazing assortment of ephemera and models too from bus stops to toy cars and brochures as well. It's best to go in with realistic expectations- this isn't the London Transport Museum with all the bells and whistles, this is a volunteer- driven museum where they've worked incredibly hard to display and create an overview of the different transport and companies operating in Dundee and they've done an admirable job! There's a small gift shop and cafe (more refreshments than...
