Hotel Indigo is a unique blend of historical charm and modern luxury, nestled in the heart of Dundee’s rich industrial past. Housed in a beautifully restored 19th-century textile mill, the hotel reflects the city’s heritage with its bold design, featuring bare-brick walls and hardwood timber floors. Located near Dundee’s city centre and waterfront, it offers easy access to attractions like the V&A Dundee and Discovery Point. Guests can enjoy Scottish cuisine at the Daisy Tasker restaurant, unwind with a drink at the Eighteen22 bar, and relax in rooms that combine contemporary comforts with historical touches.
I stayed over in one of their Junior Suites, the Tay Bridge.
The Junior Suites offer a spacious and stylish retreat, perfect for those seeking a blend of comfort and elegance. The suite features a king-sized bed with plush linens, a separate seating area with contemporary furnishings, and large windows that let in plenty of natural light. The decor combines modern design elements with nods to Dundee’s industrial heritage, including exposed brick walls and unique artwork. Guests can enjoy amenities such as a flat-screen TV, complimentary Wi-Fi, a Nespresso coffee machine, and a luxurious bathroom with a rainfall shower and premium toiletries.
Additional touches include a gorgeous red telephone for internal and external calls, treats like shortbread and Tunnocks Caramel Wafers in the fridge, hairdryer, a copy of the Beano comic, a safe and, ironing board and iron.
I was thoroughly impressed by the room’s modern attention to detail. Guest comfort and convenience are clearly prioritised, with USB ports and plugs conveniently placed on either side of the bed. The TV is mounted on a swivel arm, allowing you to watch from either the bed or the seating area. The door lock features both a chain and an additional push button for extra security. Plus, the shower taps are thoughtfully positioned away from the shower head, so you can avoid the awkward dance of turning them on before stepping in.
The bathroom is incredibly inviting, featuring a large tub and a rainfall shower, making it hard to decide which to use first. The room itself is spacious and filled with natural light, complemented by big, fluffy white towels and luxurious toiletries. The water pressure is excellent, creating a perfect environment to either start your day or unwind after a long one.
Daisy Tasker, located within the hotel, is a charming Scottish bistro that pays homage to its namesake, a beloved mill worker known for organising social activities for her fellow weavers. The restaurant celebrates Scotland’s rich culinary heritage by featuring locally sourced ingredients and traditional dishes with a modern twist. Guests can enjoy a variety of dining experiences, from a hearty Scottish breakfast to a delightful Sunday lunch. The warm and inviting atmosphere, combined with a menu that highlights the best of local produce, makes for a wonderful dining experience.
The staff at this establishment are exceptional in every way. From the meticulous house-keeping team to the welcoming receptionists, and from the attentive bar staff to the knowledgeable restaurant servers, everyone goes above and beyond to ensure a pleasant experience. Their friendliness and expertise shine through in every interaction, making guests feel truly valued. No request is too much trouble for them, as they are always ready to assist with a smile. Their dedication to providing top-notch service is evident, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere for...

Rooms: Okay, 3.5/10 Bed: Good 7/10 Reception People: Great 8/10 House keeping: poor 3/10 Resteraunt: Extremely poor 1/10 General Service: poor 3/10
I travelled from over seas for a sporting event in the Dundee surrounding area. I arrived late, at 2am, and the people were nice, but there was no parking, or microwave to heat any food up in, as I was fairly hungry.
I arrived in my room on the 5th floor, and there was a window on the ceiling, rather odd for a North American, but the issue was the light. Not only was there a window on the ceiling to begin with, the blinds didn't work so as soon as the sun came up, the light came in. I found it rather odd that somebody in a management position would renovate this historic building and then cheap out on blinds. I later came to realize, that management and decision making here is why I'm writing this review.
I tried my best to sleep in despite the light shining through the blinds, and made my way down to breakfast. The food was okay, it seemed like they really just had the bare minimum. The scrambled eggs, the soggy bacon, the basic cereals, the breakfast sausage was nice to be fair, and the coffee wasn't bad as the staff will make you a cappuccino or latte if you ask them to. That was a touch that made the breakfast good.
I then went out to train and got back to the hotel for dinner at about 6:30. I couldn't get a table at the restaurant until 9, because they were "under staffed" - No worries, I had a couple of things to handle, and came back at 9 for dinner. The food was okay. You can tell it was cooked previously and re-heated. Not ideal, but it was late so I chalked it up as that.
The same breakfast experience carried on for another couple of days. Then tonight, I decided to try the restaurant again. This time I went in early in the afternoon, and made a reservation for 8:15. - I was there at 8:15 at the counter only to be ignored for 10 minutes as the staff in the restaurant ran around frantically from table to table in a half filled restaurant. They were "under staffed" yet again.
This isn't the staffs fault. It's management. The same reason I stayed on the 5th floor with light coming through my window every day disrupting my sleep is the same reason the kitchen was under staffed every day; poor leadership.
Make better decisions......
Read moreIndigo is clearly a step-up from your average budget room, and as soon as you step inside, it has that lovely relaxing vibe to it, and pays respect to the origins of the building from its industrial past.
Check-in was less 'formal' that I've known it before, and thanks to Tanya on the reception desk for being first class and really welcoming, setting the tone for our stay.
The room (104) is a standard room and I cannot fault them for what is standard in such a room...You really want for nothing, bearing in mind this is essentially a room for the night. Ample storage space if perhaps you are staying longer.
The room again pays homage to its industrial roots and to the city in general, and there are lots of nice touches throughout. The bed is lovely and comfy, the blackout curtains definitely 'black-out' and onto the bathroom which is stylishly laid out and plenty room.
My 'only' negative is a most peculiar thing, and I stress does not apply to all rooms, but the shower soap/shampoo/conditioner are bolted to the wall just outside the shower! Would love to have known the logic for that idea, so take a scrunchy! No deal breaker, but a bit weird.
Sleep quality, excellent. No complaints here.
We had booked dinner elsewhere, so our stay included breakfast...Easily the most wonderful breakfast buffet in town in my opinion. Again, you really want for nothing, and if have any requirements beyond everything in front of you, it doesn't seem to be an issue as I witnessed. If you are staying here, you REALLY MUST include the breakfast.
Last but by no means least, the staff : Brilliant! Nothing is a problem and you are made to feel so looked after and welcome.
High praise to the staff and thank you for all you do.
I mentioned a 'Con' as being limited on-site parking, but it has to be said, the hotel location would never help here and it is clear they are actively working on expanding this, and I read they are about to redesign the reception area into a lovely lounge/bar.
Looking forward to seeing that on its completion.
Oh and another thing : We got bed and breakfast included for less than room only at another very popular hotel in the city, so well worth including in your search for a...
