A powerful piece of Scotland’s maritime heritage, quietly resting in Dundee.
The North Carr Lightship, moored at Victoria Dock in Dundee, is a rare and moving historical site. Built in 1933, it is Scotland’s only purpose-built lightship, once stationed off Fife Ness to warn passing ships of the deadly North Carr Rocks - a hidden reef that caused many wrecks over the years.
Unlike traditional lighthouses on land, the North Carr floated at sea, shining its light and sounding its foghorn day and night. The crew lived on board in harsh weather for weeks at a time, keeping others safe.
One of the most tragic moments in its history came in 1959, when the ship broke free during a violent storm. The Broughty Ferry lifeboat launched to assist - but capsized. Sadly, all eight crewmen died, making it one of Scotland’s worst sea rescue disasters.
Today, the ship is not open for public tours, but you can walk right up to it along the waterfront. It sits quietly, weathered by time, with its bright red hull still striking. It’s a fantastic spot for photos, drone footage, or simply reflecting on the lives of those who served at sea.
Whether you’re a history lover, a maritime enthusiast, or just out for a walk by the Tay, it’s well worth a visit. I hope more is done in future to preserve and protect this...
