We were a family of 10 with 3 generations and this was the best option in the area to fit us in. Everyone loved it - plenty of space and there is no denying that this house commands the best views in Eyemouth - it stands out wherever you look and I loved opening the shutters to see Seals every morning in the harbour and seeing the fisherman at work.||||Pro’s:||||* HUGE space, large lounge, nice dining area.||||* Great location - the red-bridge was down so we had to walk around to get to town but no big deal||||* Harbour walk behind the house is very pretty - walk through the fishing area to the paths behind on the clifs.||||* Historic and quirky - unique actually - never stayed anywhere like it! TEEMING with history and totally facinating.||||* The museum below was very good and tied it all together as a package for us to know the history of the house||||* We had a few bumps in the night but dont think it is haunted although it is a bit creepy being so large.||||* Kids LOVED it - in fact we all enjoyed the discovery of each room and secret panels and hatches - every room has something cool in it. It makes you feel like a kid discovering places.||||* Views of the harbour are splendid.||||* Well equipped kitchen and dining room - TV had amazon||||* Washing machine, dishwasher and iron were in the upstairs hall cupboard.||||* The bathroom on 1st floor with the shower was very good - excellent shower - but the other bathroom was just a bath so not very practical for a large family.||||The bathroom downstairs was grim so we didn't use it except as a WC. They need to work on that!||||* Dining table is lovely and big. We used it a lot just to sit and play games etc.||||* The best hatches and tea chute etc are all in the house upstairs so staying here meant we saw much more of the house than museum visitors.||||* WI-fi worked (oddly the code for upstairs worked throughout the house so try both).||||||||||Con’s: ||||* Dining table chairs are not comfortable, seats need re-doing / I know they are old but they have no padding so take a cushion if sensitive or skinny! It is a great sized table though and a nice room.||||* Board games were rubbish - bring your own. They had some good reading books though.||||* Bed mattresses are terrible - especially the Twin rooms - one felt like it was filled with straw! They need to upgrade urgently on those.||||* The downstairs bathroom is horrible - like a hospital shower - no wonder they dont show a photo of it. Also floods. Basically use as a lav but better to use shower upstairs. I actually got locked in the downstairs loo - the lock is very stiff - tell kids NOT to lock the door!|||| Only one hairdryer in the whole place which we struggled to find, but there was an iron and board and washing machine and dishwasher.||||* Kitchen is tiny - but we ate out every day. (Recommend HEATHERS restaurant on the golf course, 5 minute up the hill - stunning views and the best scampi and fish ever).||||* It was clean but felt a bit run-down, more shabby than luxury but it is a VERY old house, and the rug in the lounge is 17th century! Id say they took the photos on a sunny day and make it look nicer - there were no fresh flowers in the rooms and it felt a bit dark to be honest but still lovely and you have to take into account the context of the age of the place!||||* The radiators didnt work in all the bedrooms so if going in winter maybe take hot water bottles. But the rest of the house was warm - cant be easy or cheap heating it due to size.||||* Bathroom logistics can be a problem in a large group since only one bathroom had a decent shower.||||* The museum is open downstairs to public and you can hear them an see them on the stairs below. It is separated only by a rope to your apartment which is not great for security if you have valuables in the lounge etc. Nothing to really stop people coming up but I doubt it happens since they dont get much museum traffic.||||||Overall we loved it here - totally unique and if you love history and quirky places and the kids or adults like the idea of the fun of it then you will love it here too.||||Just keep in mind it is not really a luxury place - but still very special and in many ways luxury relates to the historical items around the house which are usually only in museums. The hand woven rugs were stunning!||||Please stay here and support it - but we hope they have improved the mattresses next...
Read moreWe stayed here for a week in August, a party of 6 adults and 3 kids 5,9 and 13. You can see the house from some distance away, and as you drive up it is a pretty impressive prospect to be staying there. There is free parking just to the side and a small lift which helps with taking in all the things you need for a week in a rented place. The rental is actually just the top two floors of the house, with the other floors open to the public during certain hours of the day as a smugglers museum. Access from the museum to the upper floors is alarmed, and once the museum is closed the access down from the top two floors is also alarmed and on a police response alarm, so no sneaking downstairs in the night!||On the first floor of the accommodation, there is a large living area, dining table, kitchen, shower room and one bedroom. The second floor houses a large bathroom, utility room with washing machine, ironing board & iron, and a further 3 bedrooms, one of which has an en suite bathroom. The accommodation is pretty good although while it is in keeping with the period of the house, for the more discerning visitors (not us!)some of it could be described as a little more shabby than chic. The only bit of feedback I would have about the layout of the place would be that given the size of the house and the number of people it sleeps, the kitchen area was disproportionately small. It was, however well equipped with everything you would need for a self catering week away, with more than enough plates, glasses etc. One improvement would be the addition of another small fridge as often when staying for a week you bring a lot of food!||The views of the harbour are spectacular, and it's enough just to sit and watch the activity as the boats come in and out. There are also seals which can be seen from the windows of the house and you can hear them playing early in the morning. It's a beautiful place to relax and take some time out of the normal day to day pace of life that can become all consuming at times. There's plenty of things to do in the local area and with a number of other things to see a short drive away you can definitely fill a week. We also did a rib ride around the harbour which was really informative and a great way to see the pretty towns and villages from a different perspective. Highly recommended as a place to stay and an...
