A moving tribute with breathtaking views
The Stonehaven War Memorial is a truly special place that combines historical significance with natural beauty. Located on top of Black Hill, just above the town, the memorial was built in 1923 to honour the local men who lost their lives in World War I and later World War II. Its open, circular, temple-like structure is simple but incredibly powerful in design—symbolising loss, remembrance, and peace.
Getting to the memorial is part of the experience. It’s a short but slightly steep walk (around 10–15 minutes) from the town centre or the nearby Dunnottar Castle car park. The path is well-trodden, and along the way, you get gorgeous views of the North Sea and Stonehaven Bay. Once you reach the top, the 360-degree views are absolutely stunning—on a clear day, you can see far along the coastline and out to sea.
The site itself is peaceful and well-maintained, perfect for quiet reflection. Plaques list the names of the fallen, and there’s often a poppy wreath or two placed in remembrance. Visiting at sunset or early morning adds an even more powerful atmosphere.
Whether you’re a history lover, a photographer, or just someone looking to enjoy a scenic walk with meaning, the Stonehaven War Memorial is a must-visit while in the area. It left a lasting impression on me, and I highly recommend it to anyone passing through...
Read moreI've lived in Aberdeen for almost 14 years and now in Newtonhill for almost 3. I've visited Dunnoter Castle so many times but never walked up to the War Memorial. I went for the first time and absolutely loved this place. I guess its a mile and a half walk from the parking. Its advisable to wear warm and waterproof clothes as the weather can be quite unforgiving. The wind was also very cold and strong that day. The view is just spectacular. The cliffs, the sea the clouds all add up to the beauty of the location. The memorial is on a big hill which overlooks Stonehaven add surrounding areas. On a clear day it can be seen from Stonehaven harbour. When you arrive at the monument, you see the the names of the battalions, soldiers and officers on the tribute stone who laid their lives in the First world war. To my surprise when I read about it, around 26% Scots never came back home. Its serves as a reminder to all of us, about the people who bled and never made it back so we could enjoy our today while we sit on one of the weathered resting benches around the memorial soaking the beautiful surroundings. The artitecture of the monument is octagon and reminds of a temple. It also has the names of the area engraved where the soldiers fought. If you visiting Dunnoter Castle do visit this place. I bet one would truly love the place and...
