We found the Lump while searching for someplace for the husband's morning run. Road running in Scotland can be interesting as shoulders on the roads are often non-existent, and many drivers seem unaccustomed to runners. So the Lump was a welcome find.
It is a serene and fairly large park, offering stunning views from the walking paths around it but also from a modern tower that has a circular stairway. It goes up maybe 20 feet, something like that, and the rather small windows do allow for a couple of nice pix.
The Lump is a favourite for dog walkers, many of whom unleash their dogs once they reach the large flat grassy areas where the Highland Games are held annually. i can only imagine how crowded it...
   Read moreIf you walk to the hospital, just inside the grounds on the left is gated road going uphill. That's your route to The Lump. Nice and easy up a tarmac road.
If you are on a narrow, overgrown track going past a church or you take the Google route past a restaurant and along the shore road and up steep stairs (you do get to marvel at the wisdom of building new houses at the base of a newly carved out unstable banking), these are the beginnings and end of a narrow path that circuits about 50 feet below The Lump, with no access to the actual Lump itself.
Worth doing so long as you don't have young children with you or bringing them with you if you don't like them, as there are precipitous drops...
   Read moreThis is a nice quiet little area of woodland behind the main harbour. Access is by the main gate left of the minor injuries hospital/doctors clinic. Within the park there are a couple of paths leading up to the Apothecary tower a simple stone tower with a short spiral staircase to a nice viewpoint of the bay. There's also a grassy ' amphitheatre ' where the Highland games are held. There's a charming walk round the outside of The Lump accessed by an easily missed path just before the small white church on your left hand side as you approach...
