How can a place get it so wrong?
We came in and found a table and proceeded to the till to order. The older woman at the till with short grey hair served me in a very discerning, patronising manner. Ordered the fish and chips and the burger after being told there was no steak pie. I was shocked that the steak pie had sold out as it was 22 quid for that which is nearly double what it should be in most pub food environments. I asked for no peas and no tartar sauce. It came with peas and tartar sauce. But never mind.
They really need to upgrade the size of the plates they use. They used plates that are inbetween normal sized plates and side plates. Dumped fish on top of cold soggy frozen chips.
The burger patty was not bad however the burger bun was hard and stale having been defrosted just before. Serving this to a catering manager in a school those tricks won't go by here. If your paying nearly 20 quid for a wee burger have fresh ingredients.
Now we move onto the fish. It looked on paper like the England team. Amazing. Like it could win the 2024 euros. However it tasted like Scotland after playing Germany in the opening game and getting battered (Excuse the pun, it was intended) 5-1. It was so tasteless and boring I never knew it was possible for fish to taste this bad. How was it managed? I seasoned once with a generous helping of salt and vinegar. Again no flavour so changed tactics and went all out attack and seasoned again with more vinegar and salt. The blandness was too real. The taste was like Scotlands goals against Germany - non existent cos even Scotlands goal was an own goal by Germany.
Bigger plates, fresh food, better service and an atmosphere are all severely lacking here. Wetherspoons serve food at a third of the price and the food honestly is 3 times better.
They ask you to tip when you pay upfront for your meal which is a bit of a cheek as at that point you have had ZERO service. Tips come from good service and/or good food. Here you receive neither.
They are capitalising here on Skye being a tourist place and not needing to provide food or service. I didn't see any locals here.
Honestly I would skip here, we would have if we read the reviews but chose it because it was right next to the car park and it was late and windy.
Give it a miss and check out one of the other places around is my advice.
Save yourself £40 and grab a takeaway fish and chips across the road.

Read moreThe food here, which is a menu of only 4-5 items, is quite expensive, e.g. £15 for a burger. I don't mind that if the food, service, and environment are good - unfortunately, they aren't.
There is no table service, something I certainly would have expected for the money, so we ordered fish and chips, a venison burger and nachos at the bar.
When it arrived, it was in dumped on the table in takeaway boxes, rather than served on plates. We weren't given any cutlery, instead having to get it ourselves from across the room... and it's not even real cutlery, it's disposable plastic stuff! Aside from the environmental issues of serving food like this, it's not a nice experience trying to eat a meal out of a polystyrene box using plastic cutlery.
To be fair, the fish and chips were good.
The burger, not so much - it was pitifully thin, no more than 3mm or so, and had been absolutely cremated, so it was very dry. The ratio of bread to meat was something like 50:1, and the bread bun itself was very dry and stale. Because the burger was "served" in a takeaway box, there was barely any room left in the box - so I only got around 4 chips with my burger. Particularly annoying, as those few chips were actually really good!
The nachos were pretty nasty too. They were covered in cheese sauce, but the sauce was an overly-thickened, only slightly cheesy stodge - which tasted very strongly of uncooked flour. I guess the chef doesn't even know how to make a roux properly :(
After eating, customers are expected to clear and wipe their own table, dumping the mass of polystyrene and plastic into a bin.
As for the environment, it's a beautiful building, with a vaulted ceiling that makes it feel airy and spacious - but it's completely unheated, so we had to sit and eat with our jackets on!
So, barely passable food, served in takeaway boxes with plastic cutlery, with no service, and in an an unheated room - all at fancy restaurant prices.
I get the impression this is a pub that decided to cash in on tourists by selling food - and they decided they didn't care about repeat custom, doing it with no staff, no service, poor quality, and high prices. I wouldn't have given a bad review if the prices reflected the reality, but they simply don't - they are basically ripping off tourists.
Go somewhere else if you want food. It's possibly a good place for a drink...
Read moreFamily of three and dog for lunch. Place was reasonably busy but we were about to find out why ... with most of the competition closed for the season. Upon approaching the bar/till and asking for a menu as none was in evidence, a young chap pointed at the blank chalkboard and said “fish and chips” in a tone which suggested I may have learning difficulties ... it was barely discernible. The other option was a handful of warm pies. We asked a young lass at the till about the contents of the Breakfast Pie ... “No idea” was the disinterested reply. She then asked a red-headed lass who knew and answered the question. So we ordered one fish and chips, two hot chocolates and a large latte ... £26 lighter we received two small lukewarm chocolates, one small lukewarm latte and a reasonable helping of fish and chips. The fish was good and straight from the fryer, the chips were barely warm. We had to clear the table ourselves of the previous customers’ debris despite the presence of at least five front of house staff who were attended more to their phones than to the customers. They all looked rather to be serving community service orders than executing the expectations of a paid job ... some looked barely awake. I don’t expect to see zombies in public this early in October. The decor is pretty uninspired/miserable and the door remained open on a dreich cold blustery day. The gents toilet was cold though clean and the ladies I’m told had no working light.
I would not normally write such a review without approaching staff in person first but by the time I considered it, I was too annoyed and actually left quite angry.
Management need to take a long hard look at the current staff and indeed at pricing policy.
We will certainly...
